You have only one CMS database for your entire Lync topology. You can create other databases in different pools but these will not hold the CMS database itself. You create these for failover scenarios and migrate the CMS database from the primary SQL instance
to your backup one if the primary failed.
The CMS database holds all centrally managed data for your Lync topology, this is replicated to each front end server that also hold a local copy using SQL Express. In the event of an outage to the CMS database users would continue to work in full functionality
mode for up to 30 minutes before entering limited functionality mode. This gives you time to move your CMS to a healthy SQL server.
