How do you modify or save RSAT MMC Consoles?
Hi, I may be missing something here but I'm unable to modify or change the RSAT MMC consoles. The best I can do is Save As or create new consoles from scratch. Example: DHCP (dhcpmgmt.msc) I add my DHCP servers to this console, close the console and when I re-open it the servers are gone. This is annoying. If I open it in "Author" I still can't save the changes back. It is owned by the "TrustedInstaller" user short of taking ownership I can't grant myself enough permissions so that it saves my changes. What am I missing? I expected the various MMC consoles to be seamless. I make changes, their saved. No prompts to Save As, or Save, etc... The previous admin tools for 2003 worked like this, why does RSAT not behave this way? Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this.

Hi, I would like to confirm that do you have the correct Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) installed for Windows 7? Based on the current situation, I would like to suggest you uninstall the current installed RSAT and reinstall the latest version of Windows 7 from the following link to check the result. This link also provide the instructions for how to uninstall and reinstall RSAT. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=7d2f6ad7-656b-4313-a005-4e344e43997d Regards, Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi Arthur, I followed your instructions. Donwloaded the file. It compares identically to the one I used. I went ahead and uninstalled RSAT and re-installed using the newly downloaded file (amd64fre_GRMRSATX_MSU.msu) and turned on the features. No change in behaviour. If I use the DHCP mmc and add a server. Once I close it and open it again the server is gone. As far as I can tell, there has been no updates to RSAT since it's initial 2009 release. This is a frustrating behaviour since it turns these tools into little more than templates that I can use to create new copies that work properly. I running as full admin on my system, UAC is turned off, Windows 7 Pro, Yet the result of the installation is RSAT consoles that are so locked down that I can't them to save any changes made. Thanks for your time. Ivo Duarte IPEX Management

This won't enable you to change the default MMCs but it is a work around that I found and does the trick for me. Here's what I did because it annoyed me so much to have to re-add the server each time. 1. Open the DHCP Managment console in author mode using the following command: mmc /a c:\windows\system32\dhcpmgmt.msc 2. Add the server(s) you want to see 3. Click File > Save As... 4. Save the .msc console in the c:\windows\system32\ folder with a unique name like dhcpmgmt2.msc (don't use the old name: dhcpmgmt.msc) 5. Edit your adminstrative menu shortcut by: a. Browsing to Control Panel > Administrative Tools (you may have to change the view to small icons to see all items). b. Right click on DHCP > Choose Properties c. Change the Target to: %windir%\system32\dhcpmgmt2.msc (be sure you point it at whatever you named the new DHCP console my example was dhcpmgmt2.msc)Cheers, Josh Bell norsemennetworks.com
