How do you change priority and affinity?
Ever since Vista and now Win7 I have not been able to set my priority or Affinity. I play games mostly on my PC but it is getting old, and so I wanted to increase the priority of my game (civilization 4) to high or realtime (it is currently defaulting to below normal). Unfortunatly everytime I go into task manager and try to set either priority or affinity, no matter what I select, it says "operation could not be completed Access denied" then goes back to normal. How do I change this?

Normally changing priority for any process is only per session - when you kill process and restart it again priority will be restored to oryginal. If you want to save priority on constant you have to use any special to do that for example Prio ->special plugin for task manager http://www.prnwatch.com/prio.html Process Lasso ->http://www.bitsum.com/prolasso.php (both above programs are free) I know also Ashampoo Core Tuner ->http://www2.ashampoo.com/webcache/html/1/product_2_0061___USD.htm but this program is commercial ...and not for all processes you can change priority -for example strictly system processes but not only

The diffeculty the OP was having was while attempting to change the prioritywith the task manager with normal procedureresulted in an access denied error. Third party software does not address this issue.

The diffeculty the OP was having was while attempting to change the prioritywith the task manager with normal procedureresulted in an access denied error. Third party software does not address this issue. He shouldn't have any problem with changing priority for game also even without elevation.Error which he has in my opinion is false alert. As I said not for all processes you can change priority, for some applications also.I think it may also depends from kind of tool which you use to change priority, nothing to lose if he try 3p applications

Why would there be a false alert - my task manager does not poduce these false alerts.

A false alert error from changing task priority? Why would there be a false alert - my task manager does not poduce these false alerts. And who saying about false alert error for all processes during attemting change priority? I mean for only one process due to unidentefied reason.Surly for other processes he hasn't also any problems

Which confirms my point, if there was an error for this video game process due to an as you say"unidentified reason" it would not be a "false alert" however if you read the original post he had difficulty with a video game so that may be the real souce of the error messege when thismessege should not appear as suchso it can't hurt to use prio or something like it but in my opinion this won't address the issue at hand and that iswhen an error messege appears when trying to adjust process priority through the task manager.

I have tried the above programs and there has seemed to be a marked improvement. but even with process lasso I can not adjust the priority. Process lasso wont even show it. for some reason, its like it doesnt exist except for the fact that it is on my screen and the memory and cpu are being used.

All of you need to check your spelling... And I'm having the same problem with the task manager. I'm the only user on the computer with an administrator account, yet it will not allow me to change the priority of my programs. There has to be a way to fix this without the need to download any programs.

Set "Show processes from all users" in task manager and try again. I found this tip in another post elsewhere and it worked for me on Whinedows 7. Seems to be yet another bug.

To change priority of a certain program re-run the program NOT as administrator

Think Mechatism hit something there, same problem but moment I go to 'show all' my set affinity comes back. I suspect when not in show all taskmgr isnt running as admin as it seems to shutdown and restart when you select 'show all'
