How do I uninstall Norton Internet Security 2010 from Windows 7
Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium.
Wish to uninstall Norton to replace with ESET NOD32 on my wife's computer. I was able to successfully uninstall and replace the AV program on my W7 Pro computer recently.
Downloaded uninstall program from Symantec. When I tried to run it, was advised to remove Norton Utilities 14 using Add/Remove in Windows. Did that and Windows advised not able to remove all of NU14. NU14 no longer appears in list of Programs.
I tried running the AV removal program again and was advised to remove NU14.
Looks like I need to get into the Registry. Any and all helpful advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sinchi

Mow Green,
Thanks for responding. Yes , I saw that thread. I was considering following up on it after I set up a Restore Point, in case I mess up the registry.
With Norton AV 2010 installed, would I have to be careful I am not deleting part of Norton AV as well as Norton Utilities 14? Then the Uninstall program would be further confused?

There's a link in the thread that goes to a post by erik_carlstrom, Technical Product Manager for Symantec Corp. , which shows the registry keys you need to delete to remove the NU14 message -
Norton Utilities 14 prevents Norton Removal Tool from running
First, back up the the 2 subkeys that you are going to delete NU from.
Setting a manual System Restore point will also back up those subkeys, if that's the method you want to use to back them up.
Then open the registry editor by clicking the Start orb > in the Search programs and files field type in regedit
Under Programs, right click regedit.exe and choose 'Run as administrator'. Agree to the UAC prompt.
Then navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SysWOW64\Symantec\InstalledApps\
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Symantec\InstalledApps\
Under InstalledApps, find any Norton Utilities entries and delete them.
Do not delete any other entry.
Then, if still listed, uninstall Norton Internet Security 2010 ( that's the
Subject of this thread; if it's NAV, then uninstall NAV ) in Programs & Features.
If NIS 2010 is installed, not Norton AV, then you should uninstall any other Norton listing (Norton Firewall; Live Update; etc), too.
Restart the system.
Now run the removal tool; wait until it's finished it's operations.
When it's finished, restart the system.

Sinchi,
Have you tried reinstalling Norton, restart and then attempt uninstalling again? Reinstalling might repair whatever the issue was that prevented uninstalling it in the first place. Before digging too deep, this might be worth a try.
