How do I transfer a user profile on the same machine?
Windows 7 Ultimate How do I transfer a user profile on the same machine? A given machine needs to change domains. I need to transfer the user profile on the same machine. I also need the profile transferred as-is. I realize I can copy the entire user folder and exclude ntuser.dat but for some reason this method doesn't preserve certain things like the desktop arrangement, MRU's and so on. Before Windows Easy Transfer is suggested, know that it's broken and doesn't work: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprogeneral/thread/b9fb7b04-7d58-4ab6-ad7c-246b5398875d/#a300d8fb-a6f3-457d-b70a-848f26ededf3 So what other alternatives are there to transfer a user profile in its entirety? Thanks!

Hi, in case of domain migration, consider using admt and the SID history feature to retain the current userprofiles and user privileges. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc974332(WS.10).aspx otherwise, consider using User State Migration Tools (usmt) to transfer data from the old environment to the new one (it does not matter whether it is the same computer or user account that is source/target.) http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd560801(WS.10).aspx MCP/MCSA/MCTS/MCITP
