How do I search the contents of an .asp or .aspx file in Windows 7?
does W7 have the ability to search for content in an asp file? I have changed the settings for folder options but it's still not finding a file that is a .asp that I know has specific content in it.

Hi, try adding .asp to the indexing options filetypes from Control Panel -> Indexing Options -> Advanced -> File Types.I have seen that search won't find anything if the extension type is not added to the indexing options, even if the location you are searching is not even indexed...

I tried that and it doesn't work. There has to be some way to search .asp file contents!

See if any of the extra switches here can help, for example ext:asp

Did you change the option from "Index Properties Only" to "Index Properties and File Contents"? Also you can try to index the folder that contains the *.asp files. Also you need permission to open the file.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Yes I did change it to Index Properties and File Contents. I have the correct permissions to open the file if I double click on it so I would assume I have the correct permissions.

Does the issue occurs on all *.asp files or only certain files? I suggest you also check the ownership of these files and make sure that you are the owner of these files. Also please include the folder that stores the *.asp files into the search index.

That did not work for my, I'm the owner and the folder of the asp is part of the search index, but when I try to search for the content of an asp file that i know is in there it finds nothing.

Do NOT rely on the broken, lame Windows Search for anything. If you really want to be able to find things definitively, check out the free tool grepWin: http://tools.tortoisesvn.net/grepWin.html The interface is a bit geeky (read "powerful"), and if it's there, grepWin WILL find it. Even if it's in Unicode, which Windows Search will not touch. -Noel
