How do I reset Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Registry?
Hi I need to reset my registry settings to default. At least the application settings cause they lost all their default paths. I don't have a restore point and I don't think I've made a registry backup (it was folder location move that ruined my registry). Now my windows 7 is acting up in all sorts of ways. I have Windows 7 ultimate x64. How can I reset stuff to default? I have some registry files in system32\config\regback from 6 months ago that should be good. i dont know how to copy them over the ones in config though. when i go to the console in Repair your computer at startup.. it just shows X:\ and I'm not able to go to C:\...

*First, create a new user account and see if that helps* If you still want to restore older registry files, see the post here by Pegasus which explains how to restore an older copy of the registry. http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7repair/thread/f9bdb855-5065-4d08-a9e6-873e0d3202de But... I'd say it's an overkill in this situation.. as you only want to reset the application settings. Ramesh Srinivasan | The Winhelponline Blog Microsoft MVP, Windows Desktop Experience

A "default" registry does not exist. Even 2 clean installed Windows machines do not have the same registry values . Registry contains a massive amount of settings, some of which are hardware dependend, others software dependend and others configuration dependend. Even if you have a good backup, restoring the entire registry will make a mess of your system: settings might be for different versioned software (drivers!), software may not function and the system may loose track of many very simple things (how you setup your desktop, what restore points are available,...) However, this article explains how to recover (automated) backups of the registry. As the article explains, this is to be considered a final resort when the registry is corrupted and the system does not boot. The best recommendation is however to reinstall windows to restore a "default" registry and make your system fully functional again.MCP/MCSA/MCTS/MCITP
