An earlier answer said From the Chrome Menu select "Pin this page to the Start Screen". I cannot find this option in Chrome, and what is meant by the Chrome Menu anyway? Is it the icon consisting of three horizontal bars at the top right of the screen? If so, then it certainly doesn't have this option.

Open Chrome

Click on Settings button present in toolbar

Select "Tools  >  Create application shortcuts" option

You will get options Create application shortcuts in the following places:

Desktop

Start Menu

Pin to Taskbar

Select your desired option and click the Create button

Thanks for your answer, but unfortunately I can't get it to work. When you say the Settings button I take it you mean the one at the top right of the screen consisting of three horizontal bars. When I click this I do not get a Tools option. There is a Settings option, but it just opens a new tab with for Chrome settings, nothing about application shortcuts. I seem to be barking up the wrong tree but cannot see anything else useful to try at the  moment!

I have now come to the conclusion that Chrome does not have the facility to pin a website to the taskbar. I will have to use IE 11 for this!

I finally a found a way to do this!

1. Create an application shortcut as above and save it to the desktop
2. Move the file into the following location, replacing USERNAME with your User Name (C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu)
3. Press the windows key to go back to the start screen
4. Swipe up on the start screen page to get to the Apps by Name screen
5. Search for your shortcut by name, right click and choose Pin to start
   

Job done! If you don't want the page to open in it's own window, edit the shortcut from C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu, look at the target and remove the --app= from the parameters.

Basically, it's a shortcut to Chrome which passes in the URL as a param. You can resize the icon to either small and large, and rename the file to change what shows in the start screen.

This works for me:

In Chrome, when you are at the page you want to pin, go to Google Chrome settings- select Tools then Create Application Shortcuts. Create a shortcut on the desktop. Right click on the desktop shortcut and select Pin to Start. It should open in Chrome.

Now that's some twisted Micorsoft propaganda. Chrome's had the feature for years.

you can do it... on the desktop screen right click, new... shortcut...  click on browse, and navigate to the chrome executable.  Select it.

at the end of the target line, add a space and then the website (ex: http://www.gmail.com).

Name the shortcut whatever you want and click okay...  On the 'desktop' screen, right click and choose to Pin to Start.  that'll do it.

I am able to create tiles this way.  And they appear briefly on the start menu and run as described.  However, they only last for a short time and then disappear.  The shortcuts still exist in the folder (C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu) but the tiles do not show up.

Any thoughts?  Does anyone else see the same behavior?

This is exactly my problem. Most of the posts here say to go to the Settings > Tools > Create Application Shortcuts. BUT .. there IS NO Settings > Tools option! There is a Settings option, but all it does is open the Settings page in a new tab, nothing about application settings or pinning sites.

There is a "More tools" option, but it doesn't lead to anything about pinning either.

This shouldn't be rocket science. No offense intended to the users who have tried to help (all help is appreciated!), but we shouldn't need to be programmers or go through a convoluted series of steps in the OS to do this. All we want is to know how, using Chrome options/menus, to pin a site to the start page when there IS NO Settings > Tools > Create Application Shortcut option visible on any menu that I - or I assume others since they posted as much - can find.

It shouldnt be so difficult. Looks like IE has out chromed chrome.

Once  you are in the "Application" view of the web site, you can press "Ctrl+T"  or right-click on titlebar and select "Open browser window" option to open a normal Chrome window.

I see

• Desktop
• Pin to Taskbar

but not

• Start Menu

Using Chrome (desktop version) on Win 8.1

I may be late but here's how I did it:

1. Right click on the desktop > create new shortcut

2. Paste the web address to whatever website you want, then click done

3. Right click on the shortcut and move it to %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\

4. Then search for it in the list of apps in the full start menu and pin it to start. If google chrome is your default browser, it should open the pinned shortcut it in chrome automagically

5. (optional) I downloaded an icon of the website to replace the default chrome shortcut icon
