How do I leverage location based default printers when my network subnets are identifed as the same network?
I am using Windows 7 on a laptop. I switch between sites daily using a different printer. All sites are different IP subnets, but on the same domain so Windows identifies them as the same network (domainname.root) which makes location aware printing useless. Can we change something on the network to identify the subnets differently?

Ryan_W, Since your issue involves Windows 7 in a domain environment, I'm moving this thread to the Windows 7 Networking TechNet forums. They'll be able to assist you with your issue there. Now this will be interesting, its designed for making it easier for mobile devices to select the default printer depending on which network you are on, but it sounds flesible to me this could work on subnet locations. This would certainly make my life easier (in regards to support). See the Technet Article http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee424302(WS.10).aspx but another site makes references to using IPv6 but they seem to be talking about GPS http://radar.oreilly.com/2008/06/hacking-tcpip-to-support-locat.html but I see some interesting ideas there that might (some smart programmer out there) or somebody (certainly not me) ;) might come up with some ideas. If this location awareness based on network identification works, then it shouldn't take much to make it work based on subnets (well to me not much, to a programmer much more)MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. From the following article we can aware the background of Network Location Awareness Service Longhorn Network Location Awareness Service If you would like to use different gateways for different subnets, you can configure it in the DHCP server with the instruction of the route/switch. The router /switch must support this function. However, after that it is hard to access the resources in other subnets.Arthur Xie - MSFT
