Make a rightclick on the taskbar and select properties. Go to the navigation tab and select the entry:

"Go to the Desktop instead of Start when I sign in"

I think you may mean click on the taskbar and select Properties.  Then navigation.......

Just an FYI  {grin}

yeah, I'm here with a German Windows so I don't know the correct name of the English translation. I used google to get a picture of an English Windows.

No worries just wanted to let you know.  We are all figuring it out as we go.

Yours is still the right answer.

Thanks heaps, your instructions were great.  Using this setting and also using the registry setting to disable the Lock Screen and this "Go to Desktop" makes the environment a bit more like a desktop computer.

I can then use the quick launch icons for my main apps, and only use the Start menu when I really need to.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Personalization

DWORD NoLockScreen set to a value of 1  (disables the Lock Screen from being displayed)

I also also set my desktop to be the Start menu background, making the Start menu is not quite as jarring as it seemed before.

It would be great if the Start menu could be overlayed over the Desktop screen itself (i.e. a image of what is currently on your Desktop).

Sadly I still don't see any benefit for Desktop users moving to Windows 8.x, but at least our Tablet and Desktop will be much the same experience, just at this time I don't have a Tablet device.  I am hoping the Bay Trail series SoC's might have enough power to run Adobe Photoshop, large PDF files, and large PowerPoint slide shows as I do not rate the current Atom SoC's as being good enough for the task, just too slow.  Other chipsets seem to be too power hungry.

Thanks for reporting back and glad you are working.  Hopefully 8.2 will fix still more.
