How do I change the RDP Listening Port in Windows v8.1
By all reports the process is different in Win 8.1.  How do I do it there?

Hi ,

Based on my test, we can change the listening port for Remote Desktop.

To change the port that Remote Desktop listens on, follow these steps.

1.Start Registry Editor.

2.Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber

3.On the Edit menu, click Modify, and then click Decimal.

4.Type the new port number, and then click OK.

5.Quit Registry Editor.

6.Restart the computer.

Meanwhile, please note, please type the new integer port number between 1025 and 65535 in the PortNumber text box.

And make sure the new port number is not in use by other application.

We may use the command below to check the result.

netstat -a

Also, we can use Network Monitor to trace the port.

Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4

There is a similar question about the same issue, but in windows 8.1 Pro. In the answer given to that question the technician I saying the Port number must be changed in the place you already specified here, and in one other registry key? Is 8.1 Pro different in this respect than 8.1? Second question: how to creat a windows firewall entry for RDP listening on a custom port number? Thanks.

You must add a custom inbound rule to allow the port through the windows firewall

On Windows 8.1 pro (and probably most windows 8+ machines)

  1. visit Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Firewall
  2. Select advanced settings on the left.
  3. Select inbound rules on the left.
  4. go to action -> new rule
  5. select port and next
  6. select tcp and under specify port your custom rdp port.
  7. Finished.
