How can I password protect my USB port?
Hello,I'm using Windows XP SP 2. I want to password protect my USB port so that whenever I plug in any USB device, such as USB flash drive, modem, pendrive etc., the system will prompt for password which will protect my computer from unauthorized people to use my USB port and help prevent intruding viruses. How can I put password in my USB port? If it is not possible in Service Pack 2 then I'm ready to upgrade to Service Pack 3. Thank you.1 person got this answerI do too

upgrade to Service Pact 3 is good idea as long as Service Pack 2 support is ending soon which mean if you don't run service pack then you won't get any update. However, installing service pack 3 bring better protection but it will not add this feature to Windows. You could not do this with Windows but it might be some third party company that provide you this you might do a search and see if you could find any. In some version of Windows Vista and Windows 7 , there is a feature that you could add your hardware ID such as your usb device ID and you could define that only those device could allow access and the other device will prevent from access your PC but it is not available in Windows XP. If you update your PC and keep Anti-Virus update then Virus could not harm your from flashmemory.

Thanks for reply, so you mean I can't password protect USB port in Windows. Is there's no way to do that? I have a laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit too. Is it possible to password protect USB port in Windows 7 either? Is it possible to password protect CD/DVD drive too? Please help me in this issue. Thank you very much.

If you want to protect your USB with password that if you lost your pen drive it contain password then you could use bitlocker to go. But for USB itself and also protect hardware you could have a look at:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2007.06.grouppolicy.aspxHowever, I expected that some third party tools might be able to do that.

Yes, this feature also supported in Windows 7 but you should have Enterprise, Professional or Ultimate Edition of Windows 7. The other edition like Home Basic and others are NOT supported with this feature. Because you have to access to Group Policy.
