Hi,
Metered connections only work with Wi-Fi connections, Ethernet connections cannot be metered. What's the type of your network?
If your network connection is throug wireless, please provide as more as details for your problem.
Why is metering restricted to wireless connections? That sounds like one of the daftest design decisions ever.
The ISP charges the same for data no matter whether the user has a wireless LAN or an ethernet LAN. Its the connection from the router to the ISP that incurs the charge, not the connection from the PC to the router.
I originally posted this in the Microsoft Community forums:
When I connect my (tethered) 'phone to my Windows10 it shows up as an Ethernet connexion.
This connexion only has a limited free monthly data capacity (or zero when I'm abroad) so the last thing I want is for Microsoft Update to pump GB of data over it.
To prevent this I need to mark this as a metered connexion - but I can only find such an option on a Wifi connexion.
So where is this option for Ethernet connexions?
Alternatively, where is the Microsoft web-page to claim back any additional data charges I am billed for the "unauthorized" use of the network link?
but a Microsoft Service Engineer reckoned it would be better of in the Technet forums.Personally I can't see why, given that the issue is a consumer one There is no technical issue here at all - beyond Microsoft not appearing to know how people actually connect their systems.
This seems like an issue of (badly "thought" out) policy.
