How Did My Photos Disappear?

I did just what I've done many times before: I uploaded 4 jpgs to my computer, moved them from the external disc to my pictures folder, then moved them from the external disc to the recycling bin, but did not empty the bin.

And they were then nowhere to be found! Somehow, they were not in the pictures folder -- okay -- that could have been my mistake. But that they should also not be in Recycling? Makes no sense.

I was able to recover 3 of the 4 (???) but it would be helpful to know what happened. When one places an item in Recycling, what happens when there is already a file in there with the same name? Does it give you a warning like all the other folders do, or does it merely overwrite? That's the only thing I can imagine.

I'm pretty sure I did see the progress bar as the items transferred, and I know I got the warning when I emptied the external drive. I just don't want to do it again!

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks!

your external disk must be connected if you want to restore the files from recycle bin after you move files from external disk to recycle bin. This device must be connected, because recycle bin is temporary folder not normal folder.

if its the same file at different folder, recycle bin can create duplicated files without no overwrite warning because they are from different location.

but saving file in recycle bin is not good practice since some of windows process like disk cleanup or any 3rd party software will delete recycle bin in order to save more space or to remove unwanted files in your PC, and your external device not always connected since you can attached to other PC or having issue with cable or device it self

Thank you, britishdhez. I did not completely understand that, but are you saying that yes, if another file with the same filename is already in my recycle bin, then when I put in the newer one with the same name, one or the other might just get over-written with no warning?

I never save files in the recycle bin. The only reason I might not empty it right away is if I didn't want to take the time right at that moment.

The external drive, ie. my camera, was never detached throughout this whole set of actions, and the files were no longer there after I moved them to the recycle bin.

"if another file with the same filename is already in my recycle bin, then when I put in the newer one with the same name, one or the other might just get over-written with no warning?"

yes, same file name within different location wont show you the warning. Because its impossible within 1 folder path you have same file name and format

"I never save files in the recycle bin. The only reason I might not empty it right away is if I didn't want to take the time right at that moment"

This is fine, but after you disconnect your external HDD and camera, the files at recycle bin will be gone or give you warning they cant find the original folder path when you want to restore the files

"The external drive, ie. my camera, was never detached throughout this whole set of actions, and the files were no longer there after I moved them to the recycle bin"

I think it should be by design, you cant move any files to recycle bin if the device is removable device. I also need to do some test. This is unusual procedure, because normally people just delete permanent or move files from removable drive (external HDD, Camera, SD Card ECT) to another drive

Thanks! How do I delete a file other than by moving it to the recycle bin? If I hit "delete" isn't that the same as putting it into the recycle bin?

April 16th, 2015 11:58am

Another thought -- if would be good if the camera named its files differently. Every file name begins with the day's date-- month and day. If time were added, there would never be duplicate files.

if the files at removable disk (camera or any USB interface device connected), the option only delete permanently, the files wont go to recycle bin even if you only press 1 times delete button like at Hard drive partition

if the files at master or secondary disk (HDD or SSD), press 1 times delete will move the files go to recycle bin, press shift+delete will delete it permanently

In any camera manual, they supposed to be have method to avoid duplicate files name, this is not consider Operating system job

this is the example link to learn about it, the best way to avoid this is by using 3rd party software, rename its manually or create different folder each photo session
