Homegroup works with ethernet card not with wifi
I've started a homegroup on a desktop pc running windows 7 RC 64-bit and connect to my router through an ethernet card. I can join and use this homegroup from my netbook running windows 7 RC 32-bit but only when using the ethernet (wired) connection. As soon as I unplug the network cable the homegroup becomes unavailable and cannot be joined again. Yet this netbook can use other network services and in particular the internet with either the onboard wifi or with the ethernet card. The homegroup troubleshooter didn't help and I cannotsee any network configuration that would be different between both interfaces (both have ipv4 and ipv6 enabled). The problem persists even when the software firewall is off on both computers. Is there something specific to windows 7 homegroups over wifi ? Thanks.

Try turning off any security stuff like wep, wpa for the time being and use default setting from the router and see whether it could detect the homegroup or network. If it work means there's some setting/configuration you have yet to get it right on the router

To add can you ping the Win 7 64-bit PC from the Win 7 32-bit PC when your connected wirelessly? If not some wireless routers have a setting that will isolate wireless clients from each other. Its possible you have a setting like that. Check the manufacturers support pages or the user manual for help with that.MS-MVP Windows Desktop Experience, "When all else fails, read the instructions"

@Al Jarvi : Yes i can ping the desktop PC when connected wirelessly. What i find odd is that the libraries and folders that are shared with the homegroup feature on the desktop, are visible when i browse the network in the traditional fashion (in explorer : Network -> ComputerX -> ...) . But i still get "no other homegroup computers are currently available". @Daniel Ho: my router is a sagem F@st3304 which means it has a very limited set of options (no dmz etc no special security options). I guess having access to my shares is what matters after all but i'm still confused about the way the homegroup networking works. Thanks for the tips.

You said in an earlier post that the HomeGroup goes away when you unplug the Ethernent cable. Did you have both the wired and wireless networks connected before doing that? Have you tried...Rebooting after unplugging the wired Ethernet cable?Only using wireless and deleting then recreating the HomeGroup?MS-MVP Windows Desktop Experience, "When all else fails, read the instructions"

Yes i have rebooted after unplugging the ethernet cable. Before using the RC, both computers were running the beta and i never got the homegroup feature to work on the netbook (and i do not remember trying it over ethernet with the beta). If the homegroup feature is supposed to work fine with either wifi or ethernet then it can only be a problem with my particular configuration, somewhere between the wifi card and the router. When i get the retail versions i'll try again. Thanks for the help.

Hi, Thank you for posting. Based on my research, I would like to suggest checking the following: 1. Please check if you can access the routers management webpage and Internet via the wireless connection. 2. Please go to network and sharing center and ensure that the Network Profile is Home network when you are using the wireless connection. Thanks.Nicholas Li - MSFT
