Homegroup Nightmare
Have 3 pc all win 7 home. 2 wired and one wireless 2 wired pc the homegroup works fine. For some unknow reason the laptop could not see the homegroup pc's So to save time, I restored my disk image from usb drive to when it worked. Same problem wtf. I left the home group on all pc and created a homegroup on the wireless but now the wired pc can't join the homegroup. If I leave the home group on all pc and now creat a new homegroup on the wired pc, all the wired pc can join the homegroup but not the wireless. Like they are somehow different networks even though. All on the same subnet All services nessarry are running net sharing is on I have tried things for weeks with no joy. I work on pc daily and have for 30 years. From the wireless I can acess both the wired pc the old way with no problems, just not through homegroup. Time is correct, timezone correct, router time and timezone correct. I need something new to try. clean boot, safe mode same problem Ive tried to many things to list, but if it is was on the net I have tried it. This is just a internet machine with nothing installed. I have backups back to the day I installed win 7 and everything worked and still have the problem....? The other pc work fine so I would think something there would not be the problem. I even reset the router out of desperation, it just won't work. Never be stumped before. Anybody...

Basically the same problem. Although I have no wired computers. Three wireless computers that can each create a HomeGroup but never given the option to join eachother. Have turned off firewalls and many other things. Time and Dates are synced. Network map shows all three computers running of my router but they wont talk to eachother. Am I missing something? I have been trying new things for hours and read alot ppl having the same problem with no real answers out there, except YES they all have the same OS Windows 7, which I am new to and not liking so far. There has to be a real answer out there. Even if hey you cant do it because of this... (give me something)

Thanks for the response. Just a note, as I said I restored a disk image to when it was working and it still did not work. After the disk restore I was ticked because I forgot to backup my mail and the image restore would have wiped it. Guess what, this morning I checked my mail on the laptop that I restored the image to and my mail was still there. I am geting ready to restore the image again and see why it did not wipe all stuff. That makes sense for the problem I have. Will post when the image is restored correct.

make sure that the files or printers you want to share can be accessed by the computer. Start<computer>folder that you want to be shared. right click file, click properties, sharing tab, advanced sharing, then click permission. then under permissions make sure full control change read at least one of them has to be checked. click apply and close the window and restart all computers and then try to access the files.

Hi, This issue can occur by incorrect network settings or incompatible third party programs. Here are some suggestions you can try: 1. Please type “Ipconfig” in Command Console on both wired machine and Wireless machine to assure they are in the same subnet. 2. Modify relevant settings on Windows 7 machine. a. Click Start and open Control Panel. b. Open "Network and Sharing Center" and click "Advanced sharing settings". c. Expand the current network profile (such as "Home or Work"), and then select the following options: "Turn on Network Discovery", "Turn on file and printer sharing", "Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public folders", "Turn off password protected sharing" 3. Temporarily turn off firewall and uninstall antivirus program on each machine, and then try to join the HomeGroup again. 4. Leave HomeGroup on each Wireless machine and recreate a new HomeGroup for a test. 5. Upgrade the NIC to the latest one. If the issue persists, please assign the machines to the same Workgroup and check whether they can be accessed each other via Workgroup. Thanks, Novak

Thanks, I have no problems acessing file shares from the other computers on the network. Just can't join the home group only if Icreate the homegroup on that pc, then the others cannot join. The problem reverses. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for reply. Same subnet, same workgroup, (network works fine on all machines via the workgroup) I use no antivirus (keep several disk images on backup). Firewall off router reset. Left homegroup on all machines got new passwords no joy. The nic driver is good as it has worked fine in the past. Two other times this happened running the network trouble shoting fixed the problem for a while. Now no combination of network trouble shoter will fix, I uasually do that stuff manually. This is just a internet and video editor pc. Not that big of deal cause the workgroup works fine. I just don't like geting my bass kicked :). The strangest thing. If I creat the homegroup on the laptop, then the other pc can't join. If I creat homegroup and anyother pc all can join sept the laptop. Thanks again. I will try different thing as I thing of new things to try.

Hi, Please also try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Open the Configuration webpage of the Wireless router and change another encryption type, such as WEP or WPA, and then update the new encryption type on Windows 7 machine. 2. Manually assign a static IP address and DNS address on each machine for a test. 3. Leave HomeGroup completely on each machine and create a new one again. a. Click the Start Button, type "cmd" (without quotation marks), in the search result list, right click on Cmd.exe and select Run as administrator. Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. b. In the popup window, type the following commands and press Enter one by one: Net stop p2pimsvc c. Access t he following folder and clear all files inside: C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking d. Click the Start Button, type "cmd" (without quotation marks), in the search result list, right click on Cmd.exe and select Run as administrator. Net start p2pimsvc Then, please create a new HomeGroup on one of machine and check the result. Thanks, Novak

Ok, Set static ip on all machines Left the home group on the two wired pc, but not the laptop, nothing to leave. Stoped the net service and deleted files and folders inside the peernetworking on all machines. restarted the net service on all. Still no good, When I make the homegroup on the laptop then the other pc can't join, but if I make the homegroup on any of the others then they can all join, sept the laptop. I am going to do a fresh install on the laptop tomorrow and see what go's. Evidently my good backup image of the laptop also had the problem, don't know how I did that one, must have backed up without checking. If anything pop up in your mind, I will give it a try. Also the trouble shoter most of the time bitches about time sync on the machine even though they are all on the same zone and correct time and date. Thanks again.

Before reinstalling the system, I suggest you do an In-Place upgrade (Repair install) on the Wireless machine first to troubleshoot the issue. 1. Start the computer by using the current Operating System. 2. Insert the Windows 7 DVD in the computer's DVD drive. 3. Use one of the following procedures, as appropriate: If Windows automatically detects the DVD, the Install now screen appears. Click Install now. If Windows does not automatically detect the DVD, follow these steps: a. Click the Start Button, type Drive:\setup.exe in the start search box and then click OK. Note: Drive is the drive letter of the computer's DVD drive. b. Click Install now. 4. When you reach the "Which type of installation do you want?" screen, click Upgrade to upgrade the current operating system to Windows 7. If the issue persists, please collect System Information and upload it for further research. Thanks, Novak
