Home network Problem - Vista/XP
Help!!!! I have a home network with a desktop running windows XP (SP3) this access the internet through a Netgear DG834GT Router. I recently upgraded my laptop which now has Windows Vista but I cannot get it to see my network printer. This is plugged into my desktop by way of a USB. I can access the internet through my desktop and router but when I click the Network & sharing centre - add printer - addnetwork or bluetooth printer it searches but says there is none found. I can ping the IP address for the router and the laptop gets a reply back.. I have also down loaded on to the desktop and installed the LLTP for windows XP as one forum said it might be that, but still it cant see my printer? Any ideas, I am pulling my hair out with frustration at the moment!!!! Hope you can help?

I am having a very similar problem. I have added a laptop running Windows Vista Business edition to a network with one XP machine with two printers attached to it. I ran the LLTP upgrade on the XP machine as suggested. I renamed the workgroup on the XP machine to: WORKGROUP. I have turned off all the firewalls. I can see the XP machine on my Vista Network Map when I click on "view full map" but I cannot access the XP computer or find the two printers attached to it. I really don't care if the XP machine can see the laptop, but I would like to be able to move files from the laptop to the XP machine and access the two printers. I'm not sure what else to try and cannot find any more useful advice. Can anyone help??? Greg

First of all do you have file and printer sharing turned on on the XP machine. I know its obvious but its worth a check. Anyway I had a similar problem as you two are having. When I tried to add a printer by "add a network, wireless or bluetooth printer" it wouldn't see the printer attached to my XP desktop. What I did was select the "The printerI want isn't listed" option then used the "select shared printer by name" browse option. I then waited for my XP machine to show on the network map, double clicked on it and selected the printer. Then I just let Vista install the drivers and it works perfectly. Hope that helps. Colin.

I finally fixed my networking problem today. Your mileage may vary, but here is what did it for me: My present system: A computer running Vista Home Premium A computer running XP SP2 Both computers are tied to a network hub. The hub is tied to my cable modem. Internet access is via cable (Comcast). Norton 360 is used as anti virus/firewall for both machines. Prior to upgradinga XP machine to Vista, all was well with networking. After installing Vista, both computers could see the internet, but they could not see each other (yes, I installed the LLP(whatever) on the XP machine). On rare occasions, the Vista machine could see the XP machine, but I could not access any files. The XP machine never could see the Vista machine. I noticed that Home Networking would work just fine if I had the cable modem disconnected when I booted up the two machines. I tried to troubleshoot with that in mind. I turned off the "obtain IP address automatically" on v4 on Vista and TCP/IP on the XP machine. I filled in the current IP/DNS/Gateway settings with what my current connection showed. Set all those addresses manually. This will not work if your internet provider gives you a new IP address every time you connect. My provider is good about keeping the IP address the same for me. After setting both machines to their respective address settings, I rebooted. After doing this, everything seems to be working fine. I did have to train my firewall. I use Norton and had it set to notify me if something was trying to access my machine. When I knew it was my other machine, I told it to give access. Networking works now, but I feel this is a bit of a kludge. I wish Microsoft would address this problem. By the way, you need to look in "Microsoft Windows Network" to see the connection. Now if I could only get my International Character Toolbar to work in Office 2003, I'll be happy.
