Home Premium & LaCie Edmini Drive network drive, PULL YOUR HAIR OUT!!!
I am trying to Map a network drive that works just fine in XP Pro box on my home network. Now regarding my new VIsta Home Premium machine, it will not reconnect after I restart it. It will map properly the first time I map it. BUT the first time I restart the machine I get a msg that they was an error connecting to a network drive, if I double click on it and enter the user name and password though I am back in again. It is LaCie Edmini 500 gig drive that works perfect since the first time I mapped in XP Pro. Now with Vista it will not reconnect everytime I restart, I map and leave the Z drive letter, put in the path: \\edmini\share\ connect as a different user: user: edmini\admin pw: admin click the box to recconect at login I even upgraded to the lastest firmware on Lacie website, 1.1.1 and have the regedit hack set to "1" but as you know I do not have the snap-in for secpol.msc to work in Home Premium. I also have the Set active option under the DFS tab of the Properties of the Drive in 'Computer'. What else do I need to do to make it connect everytime? I have been trying to get this to work for 2 months now. PLEASE HELP this is the exact drive I have: \\edmini\share\ connect as a different user: user: edmini\admin pw: admin click the box to recconect at login I even upgraded to the lastest firmware on Lacie website, 1.1.1 and have the regedit hack set to "1" but as you know I do not have the snap-in for secpol.msc to work in Home Premium. I have been trying to get this to work for 2 months now. PLEASE HELP this is the exact drive I have: http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=10844

Hi, Thank you for the post. This issue can occur if the credential used to logon Windows Vista machine is different from the one used to map network drive. For more information and solution, please refer to the following thread: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2639430&SiteID=17 Hope it helps. Hi Joson, the link you directed me to is confusing. Can you please provide a step-by-step instructions. The user name on the network drive is currentlyadmin and the user name in Vista is Jonathan. If I create a user name Jonathan for the Network drive, which I can do. I currently do not use a password on the Vista machine for the user Jonathan to log-in, and the Lacie drive REQUIRES a password with each user name that is created. That being said, if I create a user name of Jonathan in Lacie drive with a password won't it still not allow me to connect on on a restart because my vista user name is missing a password? Can you please help futher and thanks for everything so far!!! Jonathan

I added a new user (sameuser name as in vista)to the network drive and gave it read and write permission. I remapped the drive in my computer again and using the new username. I still get the same errror message when I start up the computer. Can you please provide another solution?

Hi Jonathan, I am sorry that I pasted another link by mistake. The correct one is: http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2637618&SiteID=17. For your reference, Ive included the detailed steps of the two suggestions as below: =================================================== Suggestion 1: Create a .bat file in Startup folder ---------------------------------------------------- Click Start, click All Programs, right-click Startup and select Open. Right-click the space in the Startup folder, select New and select Text Document. Right-click the new Text Document, select Edit, and type the net use command to map the network drive (for example, net use Z: \\edmini\share\ /user:admin admin for more information, please type net use /? in the Command Prompt.). Save the file, and rename this .txt file to a .bat file (please make sure that the extension of the file is displayed so that we can convert the .txt file to .bat file). Close the folder. Suggestion 2: Create the same user account with the same password on both Windows Vista and the network drive ----------------------------------------------------- For example, you may create the same user account (aa) with the same password (1) on both the Windows Vista computer and the network drive. After that, log onto the Windows Vista machine with the account (aa) and map network drive. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Hi Joson, I created the .bat file exactly as you suggested. I actually copied and pasted what typed in your last response into my .bat file. "net use Z: \\edmini\share\ /user:admin admin" I created it in the startup folder and restarted my vista home premium machine. And nothing happened, no error messgaes and the was no Z drive under 'my computer'. I cannot see it. Do I need to map the drive in my computer first?? And then the .bat file will work to make it connect? Thanks for helping all the way. I really appreciate everything so far and I just wish to get the share working. Jonathan

Joson and Jonathan, I traced your exchange on the problem that I have too. I also followed the latter instructions as Jonathan did, except for the use of B: i.s.o. Z: as I gave my EDmini this letter in the network. I called the . bat file <net user.bat>, but I am not sure whether this is better than <nieuw textdocument.bat> (is in Dutch) that comes up automatically. Furthermore the remark "please type net use /? in the Command Prompt" is not understood thereforenot done. Hope this helps to speed up the final solution. Gerard

Hi Jonathan, No, you do not need to manually map the drive before using the .bat file. Lets check if the command is correct using the following steps: 1. On the Windows Vista computer, click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box and press Enter. 2. In the Command Prompt, paste the command and press Enter to check the result. If it works, you output should be: The command completed successfully. If not, please let me know the exact wording of the error message for further research. Meanwhile, please check if the parameters I typed are correct in the command. Thanks. I look forward to your reply. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Jonathan and Joson, It works! Originally I had put the .bat file in the <Menu start> map,not in the <Startup> map. My fault!! I called the file lacie.bat and it has the following command: net use B:\\EDMINI\share /user:admin admin I found out that providing the map EDMINI/share with a network drive number - as I had done to have my backup program working-it still asks for the ID and password and shows up with an error message. Jonathan, hope it will work on your machine as well. Joson, thanks! Gerard

Joson, I have one other question. Can you please tell me if I can add this net use command somewhere in the registry so that anyone who logs onto this machine will have the edmini drive mapped?? thanks in advance, Jonathan

Joson, I actually had another question. Sometimes I get an error message like before that there was an erro reconnecting to one of your network drives. But if I double click "Computer" then the edmini share is fine and no red X. It just seems that the profile needs to log in for a few more seconds before the net use command runs. Is there anything I can add to the net use command to slow it down for 5 seconds maybe? Your help is appreciated!!! thanks, Jonathan FYI, the .bat file works fine on my Vista laptop, I just think my desktop machine has more to load then the laptop and if we can slow down the net use command somehow then I wouldn't see any error messages on this machine.

Joson, I think I see what is going on. Since we have a .bat file which gives the log-on values each time the computer starts for the edminishare to be the Z drive. When I shut down the computer/log off, it still has the Z: edmini share under 'Computer". So when I initially start the computer or log back in,it already has the z: \\edmini\share under"computer" andthe machine logs in so quickly that the .bat file doesnt have time to start before it sees the creduentials from the .bat file. Because if I click on"Computer" it will have the Edmini share mapped properly. Is there a way for the .bat file to load quicker or the second option is to slow down Vista looking for the log-in credintials for the share??? thanks for bearing with me through all this, Jonathan Specs: quad core/3 gigs RAM.

Hi Jonathan, Nice to meet you again. As the original issue has been resolved, I would like to remark the thread as Answered. Thank you for your understanding. Regarding your new question, I would like to confirm if youve tried my second suggestion in the fifth post(Create the same user account with the same password on both Windows Vista machine and the network drive.). In this way, we do not need to use the .bat file and thus the red X should not appear. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Joson, I tried your suggestion from post #5 and it DID work. My only problem with it is, I did not want a password to log onto my home computer. Can you please provide other steps from the .bat file approach so I do not need a password to log onto my home machine? thanks!

Hi Jonathan, I understand that sometimes you get an error message like before that there was an error reconnecting to one of the network drives. You would like to get this error message removed. Please allow me to explain that the .bat file is launched after explorer.exe, and thus the delay is an expected behavior. After performing further researches and tests, I suggest adding the parameter /persistence in the .bat file for a workaround. To do this, please follow these step: 1. Log onto the Windows Vista computer and open the Command Prompt (cmd.exe). 2. In the Command Prompt, type net use /delete * and press Y to delete the remote connection. 3. After that, open the .bat file and edit it as: net use Z: \\edmini\share /user:admin admin /PERSISTENT:no. 4. Save and close the .bat file. 5. Log off and log onto the computer to check the result. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

Hi I am experiencing a similar problem but with XP Home I have the Lacie drives, I map them but I cant get them to reconnect and log in each time I restart my computers. i have mapped them to the S: drive with the Reconnect on startup box clicked. Still each time I restart a computer, the device shows up on MY COMPUTER as DISCONNECTED. I click the drive and get the LOGON box asking for username and password. How do I get the username and password stored so on startup the drive is logged in connected and i can just use it. Thanks Ed Fluss 917 783 6675 sailwriter@yahoo.com
