Home Group connection problem
I have Windows 7-64bit on my base computer and Windows 7-32bit on my laptop. I'm running Norton 360 version 3. On Sunday I set up a workgroup on my base computer and signed in on my laptop. It worked great as I was able to change the name on one of my files on my base computer from my laptop. About 3 hours later my base computer could not find my laptop even though my wife's laptop was found on the network and it is running Vista. I could see my base computer on my laptop but when I tried to acsess files I was geated with a pair of windows security boxes asking for username and password. Not knowing exactly what was being asked I tried mutible combinations including my username and password from both the laptop as well as the base computer and each time the error message said incorrect username and password. I subsequently uninstalled Norton 360 from both machines and rebooted. I started another Homegroup and found that I could now see both computers on both networks however while I could acess files from my laptop, when I tried to acess files from my base computer the username password box reappeared and I coudn't get in.My base computer is a Dell XPS and my laptop is aSony Vaio. Any thoughts?

Hi,It seems that you don't have enough permissions accessing files from your base computer. Regarding this kind of issue, I would like to propose the following suggestions:1. Start the HomeGroup troubleshooter to see if it automatically fix the issue.2. Configure in Advanced sharing settings.NoteYou can open Advanced sharing settings by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type network, click Network and Sharing Center, and then, in the navigation pane, click Change advanced sharing settings. 1) Turn on Network discovery.2) Turn on file and printer sharing.3) Turn off password protected sharing.3.Temporarily disable Windows Firewall and check if the date is the same on both laptops and the base computer. Sometimes the access issue can be caused by different date time.4. If the issue persists, try to assign the ownership on this folder. To do this, please refer to the following steps:1) Right-click the accessed folder and then click Properties.2) Click the Security tab, and then click Advanced.3) Click the Owner tab, and then click Edit.4) Change ownership to the desired account or the desired group.Best RegardsDale

Thanks Dale, I have already solved the mystery. I uninstalled Norton 360 from both machines, turned on the Windows firewall and downloaded Windows Security Essentials. I then went into the sharing settings of all of the programs I wanted to share on both machines and made sure they were open to sharing and released the security settings. I then changed my Homegroup password and had my laptop join. Now I can access files and folders through both the Homegroup as well as through the network with no problem. Thanks much! ACW

I had the same problem and resolved it, though I don't know why it worked. In Explorer of the computer which does not appear in the homegroup I had to select the Libraries and select the "Share with" tab on top and select Homegroup (Read/Write). Then it appeared.
