I've noticed that recently, other Windows 7 computers in my network were unable to use the HomeGroup feature with the HomeGroup server I set up on my main system. Checking the services, I noticed that HomeGroup Provider was running, but HomeGroup Listener wasn't. When I tried to start it, I received a -2147023143 error. The dependencies list only cites Server, which is running. Are there any settings I need to change, services I need to run, or other things I need to do to run this service?

Ya, um... I can't even get there. The "Choose homegroup and sharing options" refuse to open. That's how I found out about this service issue in the first place. I'm fairly certain the service's registry data is not at fault. It's likely an unlisted dependent service or something of that nature.

Hi there, i had same problem and i take steps as Gprsan suggested,"sc delete HomeGroupListener" but for some reason reg copy command didnt work i get Error :INVALID SYNTAX any suggestion ?

nice going, the reason that dublin-z had a syntax error is because when you follow the instructions you give to go to cmd and type "sc delete HomeGroupListener" that command deletes it not only from CurrentControlSet, but also from ControlSet001 and ControlSet002 so there no longer is a HomeGroupListener item in ControlSet001 to copy from. thus, the syntax error. so youve just made a bad problem worse for any users who followed you foolish advise. dont give advise if you dont know what your talking about.

Hmm... Enabling the Firewall service does appear to restore the HomeGroup Listener to running, though that only seems to mask the error, not fix the problem. Definitely is needing windows firewall on to startup, if you disable Windows firewall because you are running a 3rd party FW you will need to also run Windows FW in conjunction. Is this the only way it will run? Can anyone suggest a solution as I prefer to not run unnecessary services. Thanks SD

Hey, everyone out there with this same problem regarding "Home Group Listener" not starting, funkybeats6 got it right. This worked for me perfectly. I ran a System Health Report and everything turned up green. THIS FIX WORKS! Thank you funkybeats6 -- you saved my $99.00 as I was about to call Microsoft.
