file and print sharing resource (HOWARD-PC) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts. Detected The remote computer isnt responding to connections on port 445, possibly due to firewall or security policy settings, or because it might be temporarily unavailable. Windows couldnt find any problems with the firewall on your computer.

open network and sharing centre, in the see also column there is a link to windows firewall, click change settings and thenturn off the firewall. do this on allcomputers. also if you are running other firewall programs diable those firewall settings. try pinging the ip address of the host

so go to the c:/> prompt and put ping there i my self think it is an ip problam but i do not know how to configurelaptop pc is 192.168.2.15 and howard pc is the same as the internet ip 76.67.114.199soC:\Users\Laptop>ping iporC:\Users\Laptop>ping

go into cmd, put ping space ip address of the host. if it gains a reply the computers can discover each other. if it comes back request timed out then the ip address on howard-pc is invalid. the laptop is trying to ping the internet, not the pc.

i can ping your computer from my computer if you want. if you have a router then the firewall would probably block my ping

There has to be something more to this. I support a 1,000,000 sq ft facility as an IT Analyst. I pretty well know what I'm doing (although, I'm not an expert), but I am baffled by what is going on with this "File and print sharing resource (XXXXPC) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts." I also get a 'detected' and a 'bang' (yellow triangle with !). No explanation what those are for? I have a home group set up (both pc's are joined) with 'discovery' and 'non password protected' settings. I can ping each PC from the other. I can see all the libraries, and can even see the shard folders that I have set up manually. I have tried turning off my Zonealarm firewall, and don't have Windows firewall turned on. I have a network printer that is working from both PC's. I am using MAC Address filtering in my DGL-4300 D-Link router, and all networked MAC address have been added. The Comcast modem and my router have both been 'reset'. When both PC's had XP Pro loaded, there wasn't an issue with networking. I have been reading all the forums on this subject I can find, but all I see are endless threads with the same problem. I haven't seen any real world solutions. Does anyone have a logical answer?

I was having problems similar to this. I have 3 PCs on my homegroup, two are on hard wires, one is wireless and has a printer. Printer sharing stopped working, and after much debug, it looked like file sharing stopped working as well. Trying to use \\pcname\share kept giving me a password prompt, which eventually led me to here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/homegroup-asking-for-network-password-when/02508c8a-df8e-4c68-8034-0719a7e5a187?tm=1319698820971&page=1#footer Changing the PC names (and then back to the original) on the wired PCs restored all homegroups functionality. Can see files and the printer on the laptop now.
