High cpu usage, cpu stuck at 47%

Hi everyone,

It's about 2 months now that my laptop (hp probook 4520s, 6 gb of ram intel i5 2,53 GHrz) become slow for no apparent reasons.

Since the problem started i had to replace the HD and reinstall windows (switched from 7 to 8.1) and i hopped the problem would solve with a clean install...but after some time (1 month since clean install) the problem came back again.

After some up time (could be 30 mins as 5 hours) the laptop slows down drastically, I open tskmngr and gives me 47% cpu usage using 1,19 GHrz of CPU, 2.5 gb of ram in use. If I try to identify the responsable process I sometime get Service system, but it can vary, and no additional clue.

Don't have a clue why this happens so here I am.

I used WPR to register 2 mins of the problem and have a .etl file, but don't know what to do with it.

Please help

Upload the ETL file to one driver or any other file sharing service and put a link to it in your next post

If you are told you cannot post a link simply replace HTTP:// with HXXP://

There is a system issue.  Taskmanager is using 12%, Explorer, ~%10, etc.  I would run a system file check (and I suspect it will find corruption it cannot fix) and DISM if needed

Please run a system file check (SFC) & DISM (if necessary) if you are on win 8 or higher
All instructions are in our Wiki article below...
Should you have any questions please ask us.

System file check (SFC) Scan and Repair System Files

Thank you for the quick reply, i've done the scan and repair but it didn't manage to resolve the issues.

Could you please explain me what the next step would be and how would it work? (i understood that it will try to repair from a virtual img of the win installation setup, should i back up data files is there the possibility that i lose anything?)

Thanks again

What was the result of SFC?

What was the result of DISM?

SFC found problems but was unable to correct them

I didn't try DISM (

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

)

Because i don't know what it will exactly do and if i need to back up files before doing it

If you could explain what it will do i'll do it right away.

Thank you very much for the patientce

When this happens, in Resource Monitor, does the Network tab show dozens of TCP Connection from local port 2869 to multiple random ports on your router?

If so, in services, stop upnphost and then ssdpsrv

All of those connections will die out quicker (than if you waited for them to time out naturally) and your system should resume as per normal.
These 2 services will retsart themselves eventually.

SFC finds the problems DISM fixes them.

What is does find corrupt, missing, or wrong files, goes online downloads new copies to fix the issues

It is no more safe or unsafe than SFC and in almost all situations it has no issues

Done the DISM and it got stuck at 20%, says it's unable to download...my connection is working properly, tryed for 3 times, even after clean start up same problem

When it's running disk usage goes 99% and Win modules installer use 11% cpu

Don't know what to do next

Given you have problems and SFC could not fix, and DISM could not complete it is time to start thinking about a refresh (or reset to factory) of the OS

Seams a little bit useless to me since the problem remained after a clean install of win 8.1

Could it be a driver of some sort? How can i verify if I have problems withs ome drivers?

June 3rd, 2015 11:53am

Obviously if you were crashing we could look through the logs but you are experiencing high cpu use.

When you did your clean install, did it do the same thing IMMEDIATELY after the clean install (before you added any software)?

Generally speaking if a problem persists after a CLEAN install it is probably hardware, unless it did not restart until after you added back all your essential software.

The things using the highest CPU are system processes (task manager, Explorer) and that is what SFC is designed to find (it did) and DISM is designed to fix (it couldnt)

I have no idea about the system specs

You are more than welcome to run another WPR trace using the below config and I will be happy to see if there is anything useful in it

In order to diagnose your problem we need to run Windows performance toolkit the instructions for which can be found in this wiki
Please run the trace when you are experiencing the problem

the problem came up about 1 day later the install

I've set the WPR as in the wiki, as soon as I'll have the problem I'll record and post

Thanks for the kindness and support

It's me again, i didn't have the time to post here so i'm a bit late.

I recorded again for 1 minute with the WPT set correctly, here is the file

Take a look when you can and suggest me the best solution (I'm ready to consider a clean install)

Thank you
