Hibernate and Restart both send computer to full Shutdown
Totally out of the blue yesterday (20 Dec 2010) my laptop running XP Pro SP3 with full updates developed a fault where Hibernate (both through the Shutdown menu and by pressing the on/off switch) sends the computer to full shutdown after briefly displaying the'Preparing to hibernate' screen but not progressing to the Windows XP screen. Similarly, Restart shuts the computer down fully and does not automatically restart. I have checked, unset and reset the hibernate Power Management settings with no effect. Any ideas?1 person needs an answerI do too

I activated the Guest account and the same thing happens there, too.I'm going to try uninstalling one by one the latest Windows updates that installed on the computer just before the problem occurred. If that works, I'll post the reference of the offending update.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge than I can explain it. I spent a considerable amount of time searching for a similar issue and had no luck. Since I have admitted my lack of knowledge regarding your issue I am certain it will turn out to be something so very simple.....lol. Visit my forum @ http://repairbotsonline.com/It's good to find someone so honest on a forum. Now for something as mysterious as the original problem. After two days of I don't know how many reboots producing the problem, I switched on the computer this morning to try deleting the latest Microsoft updates. Before doing any deletions, I decided to give the computer one last try at hibernating and, guess what, it worked fine and has continued to do so all day!!! I can only guess that the fault may be down to some defragmentation in the registry that has resolved itself. I shall try cleaning the registry after Christmas if the problem occurs again, but for the time being I'll leave well alone! Many thanks for your efforts and your honesty joelj1964.

For Hibernate aand Stand By issues, I alway start with video dirvers. Can you think of any changes in the area of video drivers since things last worked? So far, all we know is you have a laptop with Service Pack 3. it is good that you have SP3, since there were some Hibernate and Stand By issues fixed in SP3. You can read about them here:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480If you want to see what you have now, or if you have problems later, do this:Usually, and easy to check and correct, is the video drivers for your system that should be downloaded from your manufacturers World Wide Web site. Download the correct (current) video drivers for your graphics adapter, install the correct video drivers, reboot your system, then test.If you can't figure out how to check if your video drivers are correct, can't figure out how to get to the manufacturers World Wide Web site, or can't figure out what do next, perhaps we can look it up for you if you provide more information. What is your system make and model? If you are not sure about what you have, or need another set of eyeballs on it, do this:Click Start, Run and in the box enter:msinfo32Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste back here. For video driver information, expand the Components, click Display, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete it.This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork, trying things and assumptions.Do, or do not. There is no try.Somebody please tell me how to prepare figgy pudding as these children keep saying they won't go until they get some.I decided to save up points for a new puppy instead of a pony!
