Help connecting vista home basic sp1 and xp sp3 directly (cross link cable)
I've been trying to connect my 2 computers, one with vista hb sp1, other with xp sp3 since yesterday in a lan using cross link cable, and still didn't make it. I put them in same workgroup, gave correct adresses (192.168.1.12 for vista and 192.168.1.19 for xp) and nothing happens. When i tried pinging, it was successful from vista to xp, but not from xp to vista. It says timed out. I really don't know what to do any more, so please help me. I just need network for transfering files, music and things like that between them.

Hello Ramo16, A request time out message when trying to ping usually often happens when a firewall program is blocking the ping. If you have another firewall program installed other than the Windows Firewall in both Windows XP or Vista, make sure it is properly configured. While you are trying to connect two computers via a crossover cable you might find this helpful. I made some progres, but not completely. I turned off firewalls, and now i can ping succesfully both ways, but still i don't see my xp computer on my network places, and can't access it or it's folders from vista. And from xp computer i can only access certain folders on vista (users, public and shared docs) i shared some other folders on vista, but i can't open them. The only place where i see xp computer is in network and sharing center in vista, when i click show full map, and from there i can open vista comp, but not xp. Thank you in advance

I created the same account on vista like on xp, and now i can normaly access all shared folders from xp on vista. Only thing that still isn't working is accessing xp from vista. I don't see any shared folders, and in workgroup computers on xp i only see vista. On vista, theonly place where i see xp is in network and sharing center- view full map.And every time i turn off vista my network changes from private to public???? Why is that happening?

Hi, As you have created the same account and password on the Windows Vista and Windows XP machines, please logon Windows Vista with that account and access the share folder on Windows XP machine by using UNC path: On Windows Vista machine, click Start, type \\IPAddressofXPMachine\ShareFolder in the Start Search box and press Enter. Please let me know the result.
