Hello- I am using XP and IE 8 but I see a link that says optimize IE8- how do I know if this pertains to my PC and set up as is?

Thank you- Mr. Jumbleshttp://www.msnoptimizedie8.com/MSN/?form=M7IE81&publ=MSNHPSPOT&crea=TEXT_M7IE81_OIE8_title_MSNRecommends_1x1&gt1=440261 person got this answerI do too

As I thought, doing a Whois on that domain produces a very suspicious result. I don't know where you got that link but I certainly wouldn't click on it or download anything from that website. Clicking on the Download button (and I did this from within a virtual machine running Linux so as not to get infected with anything) just offers to Run/Save some unidentified executable which has a high probability of being malware. Strongly suggest that no one click on that link! As for you, since I don't know where you got that link I also strongly suggest that you scan your computer for malware with at least Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware ("MBAM"). Use the free version and do a full scan. Here is a link to my more thorough malware removal steps: http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware If the MBAM scan finds a lot of malware files, do the steps outlined at the link above. Hello, Malkeleah, thank you for the reply, can you tell me if I run the MBAM or the other Malware program you suggest if there will be any conflicts with my Windows Live ONE CARE antispyware or antivirus software before I attempt to download and scan, as I just scanned it yesterday and it was clean, and I know that when I installed the One Care, it said to take my Avast and other AV/AS programs out of use?I did catch another bug today but it said it cleaned it, so I think it's clean, at least according to the One Care.Thank you, Mr. Jumbles Mike E. There is no conflict between Live OneCare and MBAM or SuperAntiSpyware as far as I know. However, you should be aware that Windows Live OneCare has been discontinued and I recommend that you replace it with a better, supported antivirus program. I see that you mention Avast so I'm a bit confused by that. You only want to have one antivirus program installed on your computer. If you have a current version of Avast that's fine. Get rid of Live OneCare. Here's what I suggest for Vista/Windows 7: 1. Antivirus: NOD32 (commercial) OR Avast OR Avira (free versions available). 2. Vista and Win7 have Windows Defender (antispyware only) built in. That's fine. I also like to have the free version of MBAM installed. It doesn't run resident and you need to manually update it before scanning with it once a week or so. 3. A well-maintained computer - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Maintenance 4. An intelligent and discerning computer user who practices "Safe Hex": http://www.getsafeonline.org/ https://www.mysecurecyberspace.com/ http://www.getnetwise.org/ http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971 - So How Did I Get Infected Anyway? http://www.claymania.com/safe-hex.html http://www.aumha.org/a/parasite.htm - The Parasite Fight http://www.microsoft.com/protect/default.mspx - Microsoft Security at Home I've written two informational articles about security and staying safe on the Internet that I often give to clients. Hi Malkeleah, I did some homework and found that you are correct in the fact that Live OneCare is being phased out, and I guess MS doesn't plan to offer the same type of product going forward, so to recap your suggestions: I am using XP but you say uninstall Live OneCare, then reinstall AVAST and Spy Sweeper. Beyond that, scan for potential malware using 'MBAM" and also apply the maintenance and other Safe Hex practices, correct? Once I pull the Live OneCare, my IE8 will hopefully still be functional regardless, I hope.Thank's for your support!Mr. JumblesMike E. Likes It!

I never said to reinstall SpySweeper. I consider SpySweeper to be bloated, invasive, and generally unacceptable. I said that SuperAntiSpyware is also a good antispyware program. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM) is my first choice but SAS is also good. My advice to you is the same on XP except that you don't have Windows Defender built-in. I wouldn't install Defender on XP but would use MBAM instead.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

Hi again, to summarize: MBAM, Avast, and SuperAntiSpyware; Sorry, didn't mean to imply you suggested SpySweeper, -that I had on my PC prior and thought it would be ok again. ( It is acutally still installed, just shut down currently.) Ok, thanks.Mr. JumblesMike E. Likes It!
