Having problems to access internet when using Vista build 5600
Dear all, Is there anyone out there can help me on this ? When I have installed the bulid 5600 on a tolally newmachine, I could access internet at home through a broadband router. But I couldn't get through when Ichangedanother location where I used LAN to access. "Network and sharing centre " clearly shows that my machineis well conneted tomy private network and Internet but my IE 7 browser cannot display any web pages at all. I tried many times the "diagnose connection problems" option. It prompts me "windows did not find any problems with this computer's network connection." sometimes, but " Cannot communicate with DNS server (202.14.67.4) " another times. I get stuck there almost a week and am wondering if I should reinstall the Vista. But what I should I do if the problem is till there after the reinstallationwhen I am promptedto activate the RC1, via internet, the most deadly. It is surely the internet issue because I can locate other computers of the same workgroup. I am thinking what if the ultimate final copy bought from market later dayscannot solve my problem. I don't really want to stick to XP when Vista is going to bethere. I am much appreciated if there is anybody can help me on this. M.Tse

Hi, Could you explain your LAN setup a little bit? I understand that you are on a workgroup. How do the other computers get connected to the internet? Can you use another computer (ie. XP SP2) and connect to internet? I suspect a configuration problem here. Regards, Lakmal

Dear Lakmal, Thanks for your reponse. Other computers on the workgroup can access internet through a gateway. I am not the administrator of that network so I don't know its actual setup & configuration. Meanwhile I am green on networking too. Yes, I can use a workstation running in XP SP2 and a PC in WIN 98 SE on the same network to connect to internet. As I can remember, When it was the first time I installed the XP sp2 machine, everything about the network was setuped & solved automatically by the OS. The experience was great and not like that of this time. Is that compatability problems of my rc1 Vista with the old network equipment or what ? Also, although I can use my Vista machine to browse and transfer folders and files to computers on the same network, I cannot do the same in the other way round ! Neither I can use the network printer which is shared and works well with other Windows machines. Really frustrated. I wish you could help to solve my problem under such limited info. Again, any of your help is very much appreciated, no matter things get done or not. M. Tse

Hi, Dont worry...we'll sort this out somehow. You can use the ping command to check IP connectivity. In your Vista pc, go to command prompt and type "ipconfig /all" and note the IP address, subnet mask and the default gateway. In Vista this should be IPv4 Address typically listed under Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection Go to an XP machine and do the same and note down the same information. From your vista computer, try to ping the XP machine. If the IP Address is 192.168.1.1, type "ping 192.168.1.1" in the command prompt. This step should work since you said you can browse other pc's from your Vista. Then try to ping the default gateway IP address from your VIsta. If successful, then we'll see the other steps. You have to enable file sharing on your Vista pc so that you can access them from other pc's. You can directly share folders or you can use the public folder. Vista Help will provide all the information.Until you do either of this, other users who browse your Vista pc will not see anything. Go to Control Panel--->Network and Internet---->Network and Sharing Center You'll see some useful information! Hope this helps. Regards, Lakmal I

Dear Lakmal, Regarding the file sharing , Idid in fact have it enabledon my Vista PC before the problem being found. It got my computers hung there no matter when I accessedthe Vista PC fromthe Win 98 SEs or the XP PC. It also recognisedmy 98 PCs as 95 workstations. Thanks very much for your solution. I will go your Pingway to see ifit can help. I will come back to let you know the result. M. Tse

Hi I'm having a simular problem. I have a Netgear DG834 modem/router with 2 pc's attached. 1 (this one) running Windows XP Pro SP2. Which can ping within the network, access the other pc & share files over the network, access the router's admin pages and the internet (both webpages and ping) as it alway has done. The other is now running Windows Vista RC1 Which can ping within the network, access the other pc & share files over the network, it will access the router's admin pages but will not access the internet through firefox or ie7 (neither web pages or ping.) After reading several websites I have tried disabling security in IE and turned protected mode off. I have also tried setting up a dial up network and selected 'only dial when no network is detected' which it tries to do everytime. The 'network and sharing centre' detects a network but no internet on the diagram at the top of that window and this also says I have local network only. I do have a usb dsl modem which I have setup and everything worksfine (IE7 etc)when the vista machince is connected to the net and the router is disconnected. However I then have to setup ics to get the second PC online which is obviously why I originally bought the router, as both PC's aren't neccessarily on together.

Try removing the DNS under issue and use another or secondary one, if worked, so it's DNS issue, or you might need IPv6 enabled DNS address if you set your IP configuration to IPv6. Good luck

I think that your problem is in the Next Generation TCP/IP Stack used by Vista - read about http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/cableguy/cg1105.mspxTry this update KB920698 on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921583

I'm having the same problem as the orginal poster aswell.Network setup.Desktop - Windows Vista Ultimate Edition - Belking Usb Wireless Connector.Laptop - Windows Vista Ultimate Edition - Intel 2100BG Mini PciBelkin drivers installed and administrator privilege's to run.Intel Drivers installed by vista.Connected wireless to a Linksys WRT54GS FW 4.50 router, which is connected to a ZyXEL 660HW DSL Modem/Wireless Disabled on this ( Connected to the phone line ) Problem - These two systems when XP was installed on them worked perfect could always connect to the net without problems, Installed Vista Last friday, on the desktop the wireless service does not start by default ( does on the laptop) It detects the Linksys router and create a profile for this connnection, start up the laptop create the profile for it.Both the desktop and the laptop see each other, and they see the first router.Still the mode is local , websites can be pinged - open browser page cannot displayed error....Is there any other type of way to set the connection type to local-internet?Going to try and use KB920698 when i get home later on today.

I'm having an identical issue...as are many others as I search the net for an answer. Barb Bowman of Microsoft has been responding to folks on "help.lockergnome.com"...but I still have yet to see a solution. The issue, in general, for many seems to be that networking worked, however, at some point something "broke" or the OS "blocked" something. I am hardwired to a Linksys WCG20 wireless router. After a reboot, the network interface card now only has "local access" and I see what was once called "Network" is now called "Unidentfied Network". Seems that the "fancy" network discovery features are causing major issues. I do not think this is a specific problem to a specific user or computer, but rather a general issue with the OS. Seems that some setting/configuration is hampering network connectivity. My machine was connected in the same manner under Windows XP SP2 for over a year without issue...the problem only arose after Vista was installed...and it seems to be intermittent...however, I'm without network connectivity on this box going on 24 hours now. Any Microsoft assistance is greatly appreciated.

I use a Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 and cannot get to the WEB with Vista 5600. Internal computers and workgroups are able to be seen and accessable. Attaching to the company Domain worksfine. The system was previouslyset to use MS Proxy 2.0 with WinXP Pro. If I attach to myVPN connection access to the WEB is fine. Thanks, Rick

I'm also having problems with Vista and the 'net. Despite the fact my "Network Connections" and "Internet Options" ALL show that I am connected via Broadband (Which I am) and set to "Never Dial a connection" I can view web pages, emails, streamed video/music. But whenever it comes to Downloading anything outside of the Windows/Microsoft Update (for example.... Game patches/updates) Vista tells me I dont have an internet connection and to setup my Dial-up Account to continue. It then gives me the "ERROR 404 - Page not found" Screen and cancels my updates I think this should have been noticed by the Beta testers BEFORE it was ever finally released

I'm having the same problem as well. I've contacted Road Runner and they said they can see a strong signal, but Internet Explorer cannot display web pages. When I try the different diagnostics, one says that there are no issues with internet connectivity, another says there is an issue, but it doesn't know what the issue is. Been on hold forever.......................................

I am having the same issue right now, the real issue is that IE and/or Firefox cannot do DNS lookups, I can do them from the command line and I can browse the web from IE by IP address, I just can't do it by name. Chris
