Having a problem using windows update.
Hi all; last week i got the parts and built a new computer. Asus P8z68-V/Gen3 MB 16 gb ddr3 ram intel Core i5 2500k cpu seagate 2tb 6.0 gb sata HDD I also added 4 existing HDDs. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Since then i have had a few BSODs that say the ntoskrnl.exe driver has failed. Yesterday i ran windows update and it hung. i had to force the system to restart. now when i try to run windows update i get an error: 0x80240016. I tried the Fix it option and it says it worked. But when i try the update again it fails with the same error. I have tried this multiple times. i have tried to run the "net stop wuauserv" command. it runs for a minute or two and then tells me that it can't stop the service. I even tried the update readiness tool but i get error code 0x80080005 when i try to install it. Any ideas what could be the issue or how to correct it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. hello, regarding the issue on your blue screens... have you looked through the dump files to see what could be causing the issue? if not than you are going to want to start there for BSOD error's. if you have any trouble combing through the file and deciphering what the cause can be i could take a look at it for you if you would like. if your not familiar with the process of configuring your system to create the dump files you can check this link here... http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/174459-dump-files-configure-windows-create-bsod.html regarding your issue on windows update, have you checked the event viewer logs? that might be where you want to start to try and pinpoint your problem. navagate to the event viewer and look for errors in the "System" log regarding windows update, if you can post any screenshots of the errors i may be able to help you some moreRoss Kotter Systems Administrator Microsoft Certified

Hello Shawn, 1. Having no information on the installation procedure I would like to stress, that the very first driver added after vanilla plain installation is chipset. For your MB chipset driver is a surprizingly "fat" http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8Z68VGEN3/#download Version 9.3.0.1019 2012.01.20 update Intel Chipset Driver V9.3.0.1019 for Windows Win7 64bit---(WHQL). File Size 245,94 (MBytes) Other drivers follow. Graphics, audio and network card. 2. Analyze WindowsUpdate.log and ReportingEvents.log (from bottom up). Error codes that you refer to need not be alone. 3. When stopping services, the command prompt is expected to be started with elevated priviledges (right click and Run as Administrator). If you still have problem dig deeper with Process Explorer to find dependences that "hold" the service. 4. The first error code points to Defender. Give try to clean boot and stop unnecessary services including Defender. Hope you do not have installed any "undisclosed" antivirus program. It could interfere with Defender. 5. You can analyze minidump file yourself or upload it to SkyDrive or similar cloud repository. For analysis use either WinDbg (Microsoft) or blue screen viewer (Nirsoft). 6. You have not mentioned graphical card in your system. Does it means that you are about to use integrated video "card"? It is very uncommon to have problems with update in vanilla plain Windows 7 installation. I would fiddle a bit bit computer parts, starting with removing all but system disk and interchange memories. Hi Ross; Not sure how to upload the minidump files but here is a screen cap from nirsoft's BSOD viewer On the windows update errors in the system logs they all seem to be error 0x80070643: for one update or another. Shawn

Hi Milos; Yes i do have a graphics card. :-) I forgot to mention that. It's a XFX Radeon HD 6850. My driver is out of date. Need to update that. I also have the intergrated graphics drivers installed. The network card is an embedded intel. When i ran the stop update service i did run as administrator. I did the fiddleing with the parts over the weekend. was trying to solve reason i was getting a lot of BSODs. I did not have the windows update issue before a crash i had on sunday. here is the link to my skydrive <iframe src="https://skydrive.live.com/embed?cid=A85499AE2041DD31&resid=A85499AE2041DD31%21225&authkey=AJkC7Tan5kY5NcI" width="165" height="128" frameborder="0" scrolling="no">skydrive</iframe> <iframe frameBorder="0" height="128" originalsrc="https://skydrive.live.com/embed?cid=A85499AE2041DD31&resid=A85499AE2041DD31%21225&authkey=AJkC7Tan5kY5NcI" scrolling="no" width="165"></iframe>Shawn

shawn, thanks for uploading the dump files.. i will comb through them today for ya. in the meantime, i noticed your running windows 7 from the event viewer error, have you created a system restore point yet? if you havent i'd like to suggest you run through the process of creating one to prevent future errors from you having to reformat your OS. if the driver for your video card is out of date would you please try to update it for us? also, could you check with your motherboard manufacter to ensure you have the latest BIOS update for it (looks to be ASUS?) also, try this for me while i look at your dump files, navagate to your control panel, click on "Sytem and Security" > "Windows Update" > "View Update History", and look for your failed update in there, see if you can post that on here, that may give us a better understanding of your update and why it is failing on your side.. also, do you service pack 1 installed on this system? regards.. Hi, After checking your dump files, the issue may be related to the hardware driver and third party program News Rover. I recommend removing News Rover temporary and updating your hardware drivers from manufactorys websites.
