Hang when creating/renaming folders???
I am seeing issues on my Win7 Ultimate installation where creating a new folder (from any application - explorer, visual studio, etc) just hangs for quite some time (minutes, not just a couple seconds), freezing the application ("Not Responding") then finally recovers w/ the "New Folder" object created. Now I attempt to rename this folder to what I intend it to be, and the same thing happens yet again. This happens when I create/rename folders on local drives as well as networked drives, which leads me to believe it's not my file system / hardware (hard drives are striped RAID, brand new) but is rather Explorer's problem. This did not occur in Windows XP sp3Anybody else experiencing this? Any ideas???

Brandon H_, It sounds like Explorer is having a hard time reading your file system. I'd recommend opening a Command Prompt and entering "chkdsk /r" to check for file corruption. Otherwise, it sounds as though your RAID configuration isn't configured as well as it could be under Windows 7 - could you share with us more detail about the hardware in your setup, and the drivers you're currently using?-Alex

This is why in my post i also state that the same exact thing happens when trying to create/rename folders on my network shares which makes me doubt it's related to the hardware. This hardware worked fine on Windows XP SP3.Nonetheless, Hardware details:Intel ESB2 SATA RAID - Striped2x WD1500HLFS (10,000rpm VelociRaptor) HDDDriver Provider: Intel Version: 8.8.0.1009 Date: 2/11/2009 WHQL-signedChkdsk on this setup takes upwards of 4hr for a /R run, so I don't have time to do that until I go home this evening - this is my workstation

I am seeing the same behaviour. This is only occuring with Windows 7 RTM, it did not happen with beta or RC installs. I have tried clean installs and a different hard drive. I also have an intel SATA chipset. It's annoying to see a Core i7 and 12GB of ram take several minutes to just rename a file. Also, while the hangs occur when renaming or creating folders through explorer, performing the same operations with ren or mkdir at a dos prompt works perfectly without delay.

I have been experiencing this same issue since install of RC1. Very annoying. Generally if a direct save is no problem bu attempt rename or create a new folder or "save as" will almost invariably lock up explorer and require a restart of the application saving from. Any Office 2007 app will do it and Firefox, and IE8 as well. I am trying a reindex right now and will see if that helps.ASUS P5Q PRO Intel Q6600 Core2 Quad CPU 4GB Corsair RAM Dual Nvidia 8800GTS Video Win Vista/Win7b 64bit Dual Boot

I'm not sure if I should be happy to see that others are experiencing the same problem, or further frustrated. When do you think we can expect MS to chime in?

I am having the exact same issue with the RTM version. I did not have a problem with previous builds. edit: after removing both Logitech Setpoint and the latest version Daemon Tools Lite, the problem was solved. Renaming now goes smoothly again. Maybe this will solve it for you if you have the same programs. (It was sad that I removed both programs instead of one at a time, because now I still not know which of the two caused the problem, however I hope it helps).

I don't have either of those apps installed but tried uninstalling a bunch of superfluous stuff with mixed results. The problem is somewhat reduced but still occurs regularly. I'll spend some time with msconfig and see if I can isolate something. From Mobow's reply though seems to confirm that the problem is a conflict with some other process. Too bad the MS tech guys can't step in here since it sends a debug report every time.ASUS P5Q PRO Intel Q6600 Core2 Quad CPU 4GB Corsair RAM Dual Nvidia 8800GTS Video Win Vista/Win7b 64bit Dual Boot

What worked for me once was changing the criteria explorer uses to sort files. I changed it to an arbitrary criteria andwhen I set it back the way it was originally it performed at normal operating speed.

The beta actually worked well. I'll create a new folder, then 1-2 minutes will pass before the screen turns back to normal again and "Not Responding" text goes away! Running Win 7 64 RTM on Quad Core processor + 6GB of memory.

Well, I finally found a solution to this problem. I hope it will help all of you as well. My specs: Windows 7 RC x64 Core 2 Duo T7200 2.0Ghz 2 GB RAM In my case, the culprit was a malfunctioning NVIDIA shell extension. Per this thread (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistadesktopui/thread/0b5f8eb6-8ded-4e9c-832d-447aad5807f8), I downloaded ShellExView and disabled any non-Microsoft shell extensions; this fixed the problem! I then re-enabled them one by one until the problem reappeared. NOTE: Make sure to run ShellExView as Administrator, or else the enable/disable functionality won't work. Also, you need to reboot in order for the changes to take effect.
