Had to rebuild Windows XP, now I can't find Local Area Connection to get on with my broadband modem.
Had to reinstall Windows XP in my PC using the XP rescue disk. Now I can't get online with my cable modem. My laptop is fine using the wireless router, no work was done on it. With my rebuilt Desktop, I can't find Local Area Connection. It's just not there! Can not create a new connection. Nothing seems to work. I have tried running past the router, straight to the modem, but still no good. No error messages, just no work at all. I have tried to create a new broadband connection every way I know, with no success. 2 people need an answerI do too

Open Device Manager and see what it shows under Network adapters . You might have to install a driver program for the wired network adapter.Boulder Computer Maven Microsoft Most Valuable Professional

There is no setting for NETWORK ADAPTERS, but there is for OTHER DEVICES. That being said. All the devices are indicated with a Yellow question mark, obviously meaning the machine does not know what to do about them. The listings are, in order, ETHERNET CONTROLER, PCI DEVICE, PCI SIMPLE COMMUNICATIONS CONTROLLER, AND VIDEO CONTROLLER (VGA COMPATIBLE). However, I have never had to install a driver before. When the unit was originally installed, the Cable man did it, and he just came in, plugged it in, turned it on, and it worked. I have been online with my wireless laptop looking for a driver for the unit, with no success so far. The cable co. says they are not responsible for problems with the pc, so I guess I can expect no assistance from them on this.

Yes, you need the drivers for your computer. They're not that hard to install if you have them. Do you have a CD that came with your computer, by any chance? What brand/model of PC is it?-B- http://www.officeforlawyers.com Author: The Lawyer's Guide to Microsoft Outlook

I have the recovery disks that came with the EMachine D5039. It has an Intel Pentium 4. The rescue disk is what I used to rebuild the PC. I would think that when I reinstalled Windows, it would have installed all the drivers at the same time.

PROBLEM IS SOLVED!!! I found another disk, that was dedicated to just the drives, inserted it, and found the INTEL driver. Loaded it and in seconds, it found the wireless router, which is where the PC is plugged. So the problem was just that the driver for INTEL had not been loaded. Now I have the LAC and all is well. Thanks for your assistance Steve and Ben. Your thoughts got me on the right track and got me where I needed to be. Put some stars next to your names for me... I voted for you, but sometimes, I think people need more. So pour yourselves another coffee, the put it on my tab. LOL.
