are you able to ping sites such as yahoo.com? Do you get 4 successful replies back? Can you ping the address of your DNS servers?

Hi, From your answer for Kens question, we could confirm if the network connectivity actually works well. Meantime, I suggest that you turn the anti-virus off. If the issue persists, try to upgrade the driver for the network adapter. Arthur Xie - MSFT

Sorry, It's taken me so long to answer, I've been out of the country and away from my machine. No it will not connect. It will only find the gateway at 192.168.1.1...... Thanks for your help...

It just so happens that I installed Win7 on an HP Pavilion just minutes ago. My WiFi connected right up. So at least you know it's now a Pavilion issue. I have the 64-bit version. Hate to say it, but there is a button on the front that turns WiFi radio on/off. Perhaps it got bumped.

Hi there. I have an HP Pavilion dv5-1170ei which I upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Build 7000 as well. I can however use WiFi [802.11g] totally fine at my workplace - transferring files, browsing, RDP etc. At home I haven't been able to connect to public WiFi networks but I believe this maybe because of weak signal strength [1-2 bars]. I run Kaspersky Internet Security 8.0.0.506 and have not had to fiddle with anything.
