HOMEGROUP, how to disable
Why I have to ask, is there no instructions on how to completely disable homegroup. I hate the fact that again Microsoft is forcing us to use a piece of software that to most IT techs is useless. I have tried with 3rd party apps to disable the homegroup listener and provider services and ran into the same issue each time. Shares created become unavliable though the drive they are on can be accessed as well as the shares. All public sharing options are enabled. This is a Closed LAN, the need for the redundent protection is not applicable for this application of Win7. Can someone PLEASE give me a reason why this cannot be done?????? Hi ganicholson, What do you mean "completely disable homegroup"? Do you mean you want to leave the HomeGroup? If the computer joined a HomeGroup, to remove it from the HomeGroup, follow these: 1. Open HomeGroup by clicking the Start button, click Control Panel, typing homegroup in the search box, and click HomeGroup. 2. Click Leave the homegroup, then click Finish. If you want to remove the HomeGroup icon, you can modify the registry as following: (Note: There might be some risks to modify the registry, please backup it firstly then make the change.) 1. Click Start, type regedit in the search box, press Enter to open the Registry Editor. 2. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Desktop\NameSpace 3. In the NameSpace foler, there will be a folder with the name {B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93}. The value of the default item should be "Other users". Delet it will clear the HomeGroup icon. If I misunderstood, please tell us what kind of issue you encountered. What do you want to share with others? What's the error message you got? How did you share the folder? Not quite, I want the services disabled, the homegroup NOT visable or have the ablity to enable, join, whatever. And the sharing controlled by Windows, NOT HOMEGROUP. GlennGlenn A Nicholson IT Specilist/Manager

Hi Glenn, The HomeGroup won't work unless you set up one. You can share individual file or folder without setting up a HomeGroup. Refer to this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Share-files-with-someone Follw the instruction to share the file. If the sharing is not work, could you tell me what's the error message you got? Also check the permission of that shared file. Ensure the other user has the proper right accessing that file. Additionally, you can remove the HomeGroup from the navigation pane. 1. Click Start, input services.msc in the search box, press ENTER to open the Services windows. 2. Double-click the service called "HomeGroup Listener". 3. On Startup Type, choose "Disable" 4. Double-click the service called "HomeGroup Provider", also choose Disable on Startup Type.
