HELP ME ! an easy router question for you !!
Hello, I moved to a new apartment where there is a DSL port to connect your computer with an Ethernet and use the internet. I have been connected with this was for some time but now I would like to connect a wireless THOMSON TG585 router to it so I can have WiFi. I dont know how though. I have tried to connect both the Ethernet port of router and the DSL port to the port on the wall but I cannot connect to the internet. Moreover after my router attemps to connect, I try to connect to internet through laptop and Ethernet and for some minutes it says The DNS server isnt responding. They told me that my house is connected to a switch. Can someone help me please ?

1. Use public DNS, eg 8.8.8.8 o 8.8.4.4 2. Check router configuration 3. Graphical description of connection to Internet need not correspond to the real situation until automatic test of connection in made. Rgds Milos

Is the router setup to obtain IP/DNS automatically? Is the cat5 cable coming from modem and going in to the WAN/Internet port on your router? Do you see lights blinking (they tell you if router is online) What does the status page display on the router? Another options is to setup the router manually (static IP/DNS) after checking those values on your computer first to see if you are getting anything (this is temporary, do not use it like this) I tried similar setup many years ago and it did not work. E.g. putting a router behind a switch where each switch port has its own public IP. And the tech support at the time told me that it is not possible to set up a router behind a network switch like that. So it could be just that router/switch combination, I am not sure.

Here is a photo of the modem ( http://www.gradwell.com/userfiles/TG585_v7_back.jpg ) I dont know if it has WAN ports. And I just have a port for ethernet on the wall not a modem or a switch. I hope it helps

Hi, In general, The DSL port is used to connect to your Modem, and the Ethernet ports are used to connect to your computers. Also, you may need to input the ISP account and password in the routers configuration webpage. More information: Set up a wireless router If issue persists, please run command ipconfig /all in command prompt and let us know the result. Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support
