Windows Defender is Anti-Spyware it only remove Spyware/Adware and anything that related to damage your privacy and any program that try to collect information or lead you to fake Anti-Virus. However, in you case I expect that you infected with rootkit and what will happen is that when windows defender try to remove the thread then it will interept and try to hide or stop scanner. The fast way is to use online scanner and do full scan and then remove all risks:For XP: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htmFor Win7 and Vista: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htmIf you want to stay protect and keep more protect against this and other risks I suggest that you use Microsoft Security Essentials, it is free and all in one protection contain scanners of Windows Defender and Anti-Malware Scanner here is address: http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/If you download and do update and full scan it should remove everything.

PC Live Guard *is* the infection.See here for removal instructions: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-pc-live-guardAs noted in the other reply, Windows Defender is not an antivirus solution. You should be running an up to date antivirus program. If you are in North America, you can call 866-727-2338 for help with virus and spyware infections.
