I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro using Hyper-V. Trying to create a new Win8.1 vm. I've created a lot of VMs in the past.

The VM creates successfully. After I start the vm, at various points like after clicking the "Install Now" button, I get an unexpected error. "Verify that the installation sources are accessible and restart the installation."  Error Code 0xC0000005

Haven't found anything online about this. I should say I have tried this on 2 different machines with the same error. I'm thinking it must have been something in an update, as I am creating a couple of vm a week and this just started in the last few days.

It sounds like corrupt install media or ISO.

That was my first thought. But I did re download the iso from msdn for one machine. The issue that is affecting at least 2 of my computers, I downloaded the iso files individually for each computer. I have also used the same iso file in the past to install the guest OS.

Even with brand new downloaded iso file, I still get this same error.

I figured that would be the case, but I had to say it.   Anyway, another thing that can cause that is if something tries to lock the ISO, like AV, or backup software.   Is the ISO local on the PC you're trying, or on a network drive?  I'd try it local if it isn't..   You don't mention it, but is the host OS windows 8.1, or something else?

and in both computers, the iso file is stored on the machine.

The only thing I'm running is Norton 360. However, I've been running that on these machines for years with no previous issues.

Gen 1 VM, or Gen 2?   32-bit Win8.1, or 64?   I just was able to install a Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit in a Gen 1 VM.  Just trying to recreate the problem..      

same as what you used, Gen 1, Host OS is 64-bit.

I have tried to install Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7, and Windows 8.1 as the guest OS. Unfortunately, I don't get to the step in the OS installation that let's me chose 32 bit or 64 bit, for Win7 or 8.1.

Just a reminder, Hyper-V successfully creates the VM. The error occurs within the OS installation setup. The error will occur right after this window in the install setup

I just did a Gen 2 VM, no problem.   Make sure your Norton AV is either disabled for a test install, or make sure it exempts the ISO file from checking...

I took your suggestion and disabled Norton, and created a brand new Gen 1 VM attempting to install Win 8.1 x64. Unfortunately, I got the same results as before.

Hmm, I wonder what else could be interfering.  Do you have some kind of backup agent always running?   The way it sounds, something is trying to read/lock the ISO, keeping Hyper-V from accessing it.   Process explorer can tell you what is accessing the files.   https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

Well I ended up re installing Win8.1 Pro, and now it is working.

Glad you got it going.  It's a bummer you had to reinstall though!
