Group Policy Object Editor doesn't exist in anyway, shape or form

Hello there,

I want to disable the lock screen on my Windows 8.
So I used this help from a Microsoft website - technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731745.aspx - on how to "Open the local Group Policy Editor".

It says to search for gpedit.msc - Which I couldn't find.
So I searched for MMC and did the following:

  1. On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.

  2. In the Add or Remove Snap-ins dialog box, click Group Policy Object Editor, and then click Add.

The problem is: In the Add or Remove Snap-ins dialog box, there was no Group Policy Object Editor.

Where is it? Why don't I have it? How do I fix it?!

Thanks in advance,

Dima.

Hi Dima

Are you sure you have Windows 8 Pro installed?

The only reason the Group Policy Editor might be missing is if you have the Windows 8 Core version installed.

Hi Dima

On the Desktop, press WinKey+R to display the Run dialog box.

Type Winver and press OK.

This will display the window showing the version of Windows.

Thank you very much Ronnie for your kind assistance.

So I guess, because I have the "core" version, I'm not able to see the Group Policy Object Editor.

Anyhow, I've manged to disable the opening screen, just by using Windows 8 settings.

Take care,
Dima.

Hi Dima

If the advanced tools, such a the Group Policy Editor are important to you, you do have a couple of options.

1. You can use the Windows 8 Pro Pack to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. This includes a free Media Center add-on.

Add features - Microsoft Windows:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs

2. Most of the Group Policy Objects are Registry Based. There is a download available for an Excel document that shows all of the Windows 8 group policy objects, including the associated Registry settings for each object. In Windows 8 Core, you can enable any of the group policies by making the registry change.

Download Group Policy Settings Reference for Windows and Windows Server from Official Microsoft Download Center:
