Group Policy Issue
I work in a school with two domain controllers (Server 2008 & Server 2008 R2) in a FFL of Server 2003. For students we use mandatory profiles and group policy to restrict what they can access on the computers. Over the past few weeks we have been testing windows 7 as we are deploying it over the summer break (at the same time we plan to upgrade to server 2008 r2 and increase the forest function level). However, one problem we have encountered in testing is this: On the first logon a student will have the mandatory profile and group policy settings loaded as expected. On ALL subsequent logins for that user the group policy will fail to load the settings properly. This is a serious issue and if we cannot resolve it we will be unable to upgrade to windows 7. Thoughts please?

What settings are you trying to apply? Do you apply any GPO settings to the user profile location? Are the new .v2 Profiles appearing for the users?Lee Bowman MCITP MCTS

I solved it now. I already knew about .v2 profiles but this is where I think I went wrong: In Windows 7 it saves policy settings to the ntuser.pol file. Because I had made the profile mandatory BEFORE logging on once with a restricted account the settings were never saved. When it tried to log on again it could see a cached profile and tried to load from ntuser.pol but couldn't. Well I sorted that out, but whether or not it fixed the problem is no longer a problem as I specified in the GPO that all cached profiles are deleted on log off. Problem solved.
