Getting repeated MMC problems on Windows 7 Home Edition
Getting repeated MMC problems as well as another error when logging on and off. It is Windows 7 Home Edition SP1. This has happened as many as three times following rebuilding the OS from scratch. My immediate thought was virus or malware but have run a full Symantec check and repair using bootable ISO image as well as running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware in safe mode and neither have detected anything. Both had up-to-date pattern files from a few days ago. The main errors are when using MMC such as event viewer and clicking on application event log it will say "MMC has detected an error in a snap-in and will unload it." and if you click OK it will throw the following error: "Unhandled Exception in Managed Code Snap-in. Exception type: system.reflection.targetinvocationexception" Also when you log-on or off the following error appears: "LogonUI.exe - Bad Image. C:\Windows\system32\SmartcardCredentialProvider.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing he program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support." Any help or suggestions welcome !

I don't see the adminconsole mentioned in this article. Is it 2008 R2 only ?

What is the last message in the thread in the link I posted? Perfect that was it! I deleted the cache file "adminconsole" and that fixed the problem.Hope this helps, Gerry

I'll re-phrase that. When I check the path I do not see anything under C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\MMC called adminconsole. I only see a file called taskschd. I have ensured that all file types are displayed (hidden, protected etc).

Hi, I would like to verify if the computer is in domain. Is Forefront Client Security installed on the computer? If so, please try the following KB. http://support.microsoft.com/?id=942581 If not, please run system file checker for a test. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833Niki Han TechNet Community Support
