I'm seeing exactly the same problem.  0x80070004 error after Gathering Information.  This is a reasonably fresh install of Win 8, I've only installed Firefox, Office and Nero at this point.

The one thing I did do, and I'm starting to wonder about now... As I'm running an SSD for C: I moved the Users directory over to a hard disk and used a junction so Windows could find it.  Then I used a Little program called JunctionBox to reset all the standard Windows junctions.

Would an OS update fail because the Users directory wasn't on C:? Hmm.

Investigating further this is almost certainly as I have moved my Users directory.  Which is a pain, as my full Users directory wont fit on the SSD which is C:

I recommend creating a Win 7 style system image on external storage and a recovery USB key before upgrading. You have no way to return if something goes wrong. I tested the process with MS a couple of months ago on an HP notebook, discovered I could not return any other way and luckily had the image and Win 8 recovery USB. By the way all went well.

It sounds like I should avoid the 'upgrade' and should live with Win 8. Any downsides lurking if I choose to avoid this?

Same problem for me. I ran WSReset.exe and disabled my anti virus software (Sophos), but it didn help. Beside that, I dont use any symbolic links to other partitions (all of my system files are stored on C:). I am getting the attached error output in the setuperr.log file.

My thinking is this.  Win 8.1 includes a new SkyDrive, that uses "placeholder" files.  So during installation SkyDrive is naturally going to want to get in there to your Users profile and do "stuff."  The installer could be looking at the registry and getting the location of Users, which if you've moved with the junction method is still C:\Users.  So it's trying to find a profile in C:\Users using some method that doesn't respect the junction link, hence the user profile is invalid.

Given the media talk about Smart Files and "placeholder" files, I'm guessing SkyDrive wants to access the Users profile directly.  Which is going to be a problem.

Of course I can't move my Users directory back to C:\, it won't fit.  Surely the combination of smaller SSD with bigger HDD is gaining traction, as it makes financial sense.  Perhaps Microsoft could come up with a tool that allowed us to quickly and easily relocate our Users directory, and make all the necessary registry adjustments so the junction method was not required.  Or work to make SkyDrive support junctions, which everything else in Windows 8 seems to.

Or, I'm totally wrong.  I dunno :)

drivers for mobile machines are a real headache for upgrades, this is why i recommend using the version of windows supplied

HAVE THERE BEEN ANY ANSWERS YET? MY PROBLEM SEEMS TO HAVE ORIGINATED IN A CHANGE IN MY USER PROFILE NECESSITATED BY A CRASH SOMETIME AGO IN MY ORIGINAL ONE. SO, MY SETUPERR FILE SAYS IT CANNOT MAP FOR MY [ORIGINAL] USER PROFILE, THAT THERE IS NOT A VALID PROFILE AND THAT THE CONFIGURATION REGISTRY DATABASE IS CORRUPT. I am encountering the same error, and I also have Windows 8 installed on an SSD, with a Junction pointing to a larger hard drive for \Users

Note that removing Corel Draw Home and Student X5 "extras" removed the junction for \Users, so I had to restore from a backup. The error is repeatable...

Has anybody seen any comment or acknowledgement from Microsoft that this is an issue?  Browsing around the web the best solution I've found is to blow away the system and start again, which is a very kludgey solution.  What happens next time an update comes out...

It would be nice to hear "we see a problem, we're working on it" from Microsoft rather than leaving us in the dark.

What about this possibility.  Is it possible to mount the hard disk to the C:\Users directory?  What's going to happen if I try to do that, following the instructions here:

Given that is happening in the virtual disk service, will that avoid the problem with future updates?

Adding my case to give this more weight. Windows 8 Pro, junction in C:\ as follows:

Which is, of course, to reserve the precious SSD space to the system and keep the heavy user data on a hard disk.

I also had to create an additional junction in C:\ to be able to update my 8 Pro up to the point where the 8.1 upgrade would show up in the store:

Upgrade is not supposed to work or intended to work if the users folder has been moved.

I had moved my Users folder off too. I was aware this was not compatible with upgrading. So prior to upgrading to 8.1 I moved it back (first relocated documents, pictures and downloads since my main drive is only 120gb). My original change involved registry changes too, so I reversed those changes as well. After that my upgrade to 8.1 worked.

Moving the Users profile folder or moving the Program Files folder will both prevent an in place upgrade from succeeding. Relocating the default folder locations can cause some other incompatibility problems also.

I am not familiar with the product that you used to relocate the junctions, so I do not know if moving them back will fix the problem you are having.

1. I had the same issue with my 256Gb SSD because I created a Reserved partition of 25Gb for SSD over provisioning, formatted as D
2. Windows 8.1 Upgrade kept failing after steps 3,4,6.  I then added Step 5  and now am up to step 7.
3. After my Clean Install of Windows 8 on the formatted and repartitioned SSD as per normal C Drive install
4. Activate (I did anyway)...then Update ONLY KB2871839 via Windows Update..Reboot
5. Computer Management - Delete Active Reserved Partition D
6. Windows Store...Login with Live Account.. Windows 8.1 Upgrade Visible as 1st Option
7. Windows 8.1 Pro "Downloading"...
8. Fingers X'ed

I have the same problem on 2 PC but I noted that my HD have 4 partitions:

Vol 0 System
Vol 1 C:  (boot)
Vol 2 D:
Vol 3 Recovery

Seems that the active is Vol 0 and has the BootMgr. So Windows in Vol 1 is not the active partition.

Guess that the first part. is used for recovery by some 3rd party sw? 

I have fixed this problem using the Store download, but I couldn't get iso downloads to work. My standard setup is to create an administrator user named 'Owner' as the first user created having a standard Profile location; this user is only used for administrative tasks. All other users are 'Standard' created on E: after changing the following in the Registry (create a restore point first):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\ProfilesDirectory from

%SystemDrive%\Users to E:\Users so that new user profiles are created on E:. Note a User profile is created at the first User Login, NOT at time of User creation, using the ProfilesDirectory setting at that time.

I first tried to upgrade from Win 8 to 8.1 while logged into a User with it's profile on E: and it failed with the above error. I then logged in to Owner and the upgrade succeeded; Win 8.1 seems to see the profiles on E: ok, but it had reset the value of ProfilesDirectory.

I don't like the way Windows 8.1 tries very hard to FORCE you to create a user with a Microsoft Account; not a local account.ProfilesDirectory

I you don't have a user on C: you could make sure ProfilesDirectory is standard and create a new user to use to install Win 8,1.

I haven't read any further, but I can't believe this the problem. I have the same issue, and have not moved my user directory.

What a heap of horse manure Windows 8 is turning out to be. All you guys are smart techies who have far more knowledge of what is going on in the background than the average Joe. How the heck is the man in the street supposed to solve an issue like this without paying a mart guy like you thousands of $s??? This is no longer user friendly!!!
