If not already installed this suggestion should be tried first where Shutdown takes a long time. Download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Servicehttp://snipurl.com/1pyo4u [www_microsoft_com] A snipped URL has been used to avoid providing a broken link. Another suggestion is to look through the advice in the next link:http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm This Article was written some years ago but much is still relevant today for those using Windows XPHope this helps, Gerry Cornell

I also suspect video driver issues when things like this happen and that is easy to check out if you will provide more information about your system.Maybe someday the XP forums "Ask a question" dialog will ask these questions automatically when a new thread is started so I do not have to ask them every single time. It might even be possible to resolve an issue in a single reply when enough information is provided. Please provide additional information about your system:What is your system make and model? What is your XP Version and Service Pack?Describe your current antivirus and anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc.Does the afflicted system have a working CD/DVD drive?Do you have a genuine bootable XP installation CD (this is not the same as any Recovery CDs that came with your system)? What do you see that you don't think you should be seeing? If the system used to work properly, what do you think might have changed since the last time it did work properly? Please provide additional information about your system:Click Start, Run and in the box enter:msinfo32Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. For video driver information, expand the Components, click Display, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted information. This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork.Do, or do not. There is no try.I decided to save up points for a new puppy instead of a pony!

Sorry but I can't do this, I don't have the headings or options that you told me to do. Yes I have tried to do what Gerry suggested and didn't work.

What didn't work? What happened when you tried? Another suggestion, have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any from than more than 48 hours ago. You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important. A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. You will see a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. This places a copy of the report into your Clipboard. Paste into the body your message. Make sure that this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell
