Gets error - unable to connect to the internet intermittently in Windows XP machine.
I have a computer connected to a wired network - I also have wireless on the same network. My main PC, which I use for work has suddenly started to loose its internet connection - IE comes up with an error message saying unable to connect to the internet, when I click diagnose, then click Next it says that my connection has been restored, this is happening every 2 or 3 minutes. As far as I can tell, the network connection seems to be fine.I first had this issue when I switched from using the wireless network to a LAN connection, now when I try the wireless it does the same thingThis issue does not happen on any other computer on the network

Assuming you're NOT seeing the effects of a hijackware infection, you would find appropriate assistance in the Networking forum: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/xpnetwork/threads~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft

The problem seems to be related to a 1394 Network driver; in my device manager, I can see the Broadcom Network Card and a 1394 Network card (I think that this is a generic MS driver). If I delete the 1394 network card, then it works much better, however, when I reboot the 1394 netwok card is back - how do I remove it permanently

Original Title: Intermitent connection problem.I have in intermitent connection problem - every few minutes IE says that it is unable to connect, when I click Diagnose, then Next the connection is restored. This happens on just one PC - I have 3 on the network. It may be my imagination, but when I disable the 1394 adapter, it seems to be more reliableI have reinstalled the BIOS, the network driver and chipset drivers (they were all out of date anyway)Could my problem be caused by Norton firewall? Is it likely to be software of Hardware related?

Hi Mattsurf,Did you make any software or hardware changes on your machine prior to this issue?Let’s follow these methods & check if it helps.Method 1You may disable Norton software temporarily & check if the issue persists.Note: After checking turn-on the security software.Method 2You may boot the computer into ‘Safemode with Networking’ and check if the issue persists. It will start Windows XP with a limited set of files and drivers. Startup programs do not run in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed, follow the steps to boot the computer in safe mode:a. Restart the computer.b. Start tapping F8 key.c. You will get advanced boot option window.d. Select the option ‘Safe mode with Networking’.For more information, refer this link:A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XPMethod 3You may also run the “Fix it” tool from this link. How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)Hope the information helps. I will try to run in safe modeI also discovered that I am getting the same issue on both wireless and LAN - limited to just this PCThe only thing I changed on the PC initially was to install the network card

I started windows in safe mode - the connection works fine, so I guess that it is something that is loading during windows startup which is causing the problem. where do I go from here?

Please answer all of the following diagnostic questions by number in your very next reply (no need to quote this post):1. Does the behavior persist if you start IE in No Add-ons mode? => Start | (All) Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet Explorer (No add-ons).2. Does the behavior persist if you open IE (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737, run the Fix It and then reboot?3. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? [1]4. Has a(nother) Norton application or a McAfee application ever been installed on this computer?5. Did a Norton free-trial or a McAfee free-trial come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it? (Doesn't matter if you never used or Activated it.)6. Is the computer currently fully-patched at Windows Update?=================================[1] Only one (1) ant-ivirus application/security suite should be installed & loading at boot; only one (1) firewall should be enabled at any given time.~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) ~ MS MVP (IE, Mail, Security, Windows & Update Services) since 2002 ~ Disclaimer: MS MVPs neither represent nor work for Microsoft
