Get two different versions of the same file when opening it with notepad and ultraedit
I got Windows 7 installed and try to edit httpd.conf on the apache installation. When I edit the file in notepad everything is fine. When I open that file in ultraedit (the file icons has this lock) and make some changes I can save it. No error message. But when I reopen it in notepad there is no change. Changing the file in notepad and reopening in Ultraedit: Still get the old ultraedit-changed version and not the changes made by notepad. If I run Ultraedit as administrator there is no problem and I can see the notepad-edits. Seems like Ultraedit accesses a different version of the httpd.conf file when running as normal user with admin privileges. And saves a different version so I cannot see the changes in notepad. How can this be?

Found an answer recently. The prob is the virtualization in vista and win7. An 3rd-party application that does not follow the systems requirement will run in its own virtualized environment, getting its own copies of files somewhere in the users directory. This way the application does not crash when it runs against any UAC restrictions. So when You are editing, You change only a copy not the original file. Really funny! Its getting more and more complicated when You want to do something beyond writing emails or office docs or shuffling media files.

Hi Just for information, the default location for thes virtualized files is C:\Users\user name\Local\Virtual Store. In the Virtual Store folder, you may see a Program Files folder with the name of the program and the files in that folder. Also, when you click on the C:\Program Files\name of program folder, if that program is virtualizing any files, you should see a Compatibility Files button appear on the Command Bar. Click that button and it will open the folder where the virtualized files are located. Hope this helps. Thank You for using Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP
