Generic Host error message
I am running XP home, SP3. 32 bit. I have no HP peripherals. I am told by MS to run either KB 894931-x86-ENU, and/or KB 890830. They do no good, though 894931 will not complete its run process. The Generic Host error detail says the problem is in poete\locals~1\temp\werddf96.dir00\SVhost.exe.mdmp (and in all of the above except the SV host portion which is replaced by ...appcompat.txt). I can't locate these files (yet) and don't know what to do if I do locate them. Help!1 person needs an answerI do too

Hi PoeteMaudit,1. What exactly happens when you run or install the updates?2. Do you get any error message? If the updates are available as optional updates, then we do not recommend you to install the updates unless you desperately need it. The update KB890830 will help you remove the specific, prevalent malicious software from computer.Step 1: Try installing the update KB890830 and check the result.See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890830Note: If you still cannot install the update, then run Microsoft fix it from this article and then try to install the update:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798Step 2: Run sfc (system file checker) scan to see if any system file is missing or corrupt. To do this, try these steps:a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd and click ok.b. On the command prompt, type sfc /scannow and hit enter.c. Once the scan is complete, restart the computer and check if the issue persists.Note: You will be prompted to insert the Windows XP disc if any file is missing. For more information, see Description of Windows XP System File Checker (Sfc.exe)Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think.
