General IE8 Performance Problems using Win 7
Symptoms: 1) About 30% of the time, IE explorer x32 will do nothing when I click on it. 2) If it does open, abt 20% of the time the window wiill be blank or show 'connecting' and that's it. I have to use task manager to get rid of it; it stops responding. WHEN it does open, it tends to open very slugishly. 3) IF it works, I have problems opening a tab. Again the tab just sits there in 'connecting' status. Task manager is the only way to continue. Of course, there as another problem with IE explorer x32 failure; I lose my help functions with Office 2010. I can not find any rhyme or reason for the random lack of response. IE explorer x64 seems to works fine. Some early threads (2009) indicated a possible connection between Java x32 and IE explorer x32. I do have Java x32, version 6-rel 24, installed for MP3Rockec and some web sites. I do not have Java x64 installed. I eliminated Java x32 as a test, and IE explorer x32 seemed to return to normal. Reinstalling Java x32 and IE explorer, in essence, stops working. I would rather not have to drop Java. There is nothing on the Java web site regarding any performance problems betweenJava x32 and IE8 x32. I am resubmitting this thread because the previous threads are two-years old, and I do not know if others are now having the same problem with the current build of Win 7. In order to get IE8 x32 back and functioning and get my Office help function back, I have uninstalled Java x32. IE8 x32 now seems to be working much better. There are still some occasional hangs when opening multiple tabs. Does anyone know if IE9 x32 has addressed any of the performance problems associated with IE8 x32, especially Java x32 support? There goes my classical baroque music while I am working on my computer. Any further comments????

Please follow the steps in the following article to reset IE settings. How to reset Internet Explorer settings http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 If it does not help, please click the Start Button, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons). If the issue does not reoccur, it may be caused by an IE Add-on. In that case, let’s continue to perform the following steps to narrow down the cause. Check Internet Explorer Add-Ons ========================= 1. Click Tools, and then click Internet Options. 2. Click the "Programs" tab, and then click Manage Add-ons. 3. Select an add-on in the Name list, and then click Disable. 4. Restart IE with Add-ons and check the issue again. If the issue is resolved, the disabled Add-on was the cause of the issue. If the issue reoccurs, continue to disable the next Add-on using the same method. By doing so, we could determine which Add-on contributed to the issue.

the knowledgebase answer, kb923737, specificly says that it does not apply to Win 7. On my add-in list, 5 ouf 8 are microsoft add-ins. One is the new flash player that is surppossed to work with IE8 x64. It was just added Friday long after the performance problem manifested itself, though whatever it takes. In order to be more complete, do you want me to reinstall Java x32 to simulate the whole list of products that were on the machine? I am more than willing to see if we can narrow the problem list down. I'm sure I'm not alone. Others are just not as vocal as myself. I just tried initializing IE8 with no ad-ons using the Start, Accessories, Systems Tools path, and guess what? Nothing! Repeated clicks on the entry just yielded the little circle that stops after about 5 sec. The circle is only with x32, I don't see it if I use IE8 x64, and x64 starts after abt 1 sec. Is this meaningful, and if so, what's next. Lately x32 seems to be more balky in starting. Awaiting your response.

IE though did hang up when I tried to open a third tab. I had to use task mgr to shut it down. So we have two conflicting results and still hanging on multiple tabs. Awaiting your response.

At that time, I disabled the add ons: DCA BHO (from my USC toobar), the ask.com/MP3 Rocked, and the Java(tm) Plug-In 2 SSV Helper w/o deleting the whole Java package. They all seemed to improve IE8 x32 performance. It is much more stable now. It ony hangs on loading about 15-20% of the time, tolerable. Awaiting your response.

This issue is now dead. For various reasons I had to strip the system down to the basic CD that came with the PC and rebuild from scratch. During the rebuild, IE8 x32 performed identical to IE8 x64. After I got a good image restore, I installed IE9 and am going with it. So far I like the performance and new features - Technet is pinned to the taskbar. Thank all who have contributed.
