Fresh Hard Drive & Fresh Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit installed - Links will not work.
I have a fresh new hard drive in my 3 year old computer due to hard drive failure. The computer has a 64-bit processor and 4GB of Ram. I've done a 'Clean' install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Full Install (Retail Version). IE8 came with that as an automatic install. My installation of Win 7 is about a week old. Win 7 has been registered and activated. After activation, most everything loaded just fine. The majority of my old programs, which are 'retail' not 'OEM', went into Win 7 with no problems. But Win 7 did refuse to install some programs from about 1998. Not a problem, it just said 'NO' and that was that. So, I'll find current programs to replace the ones that won't install. However, I do have a major problem with IE8. Links inside most webpages, even within Microsoft Support & Forums, do not work. Also, inside Comcast email, the print button will not work. I've tried the MS 'Fix It', which did the repair one time and the links worked until I closed IE8 down. Next time opening IE8 the links, again, did not work. Now, the 'Fix It' repair will not fix it again. This feature is absolutely necessary for what I do. I use it as part of my business to print out receipts for purchases. And I use the links to verify orders placed and to verify shipping progress. Those features are totally shut down with IE8. Yes, I can copy the links and paste them into the browser to force the link to work. However, this is time consuming and awkward. And I can force a print by doing a copy/paste, but again that is time consuming and awkward. Anyone in business is going to find this loss of features to be unacceptable and a waste of precious time. I've searched the web for answers and I've searched Microsoft for answers. This has been a specific and broadly experienced problem for at least a year. I've seen generic answers being offered by MS techs, which generally suggest the computer owner has done something wrong and must, first, find what was done wrong, and then fixthe problem him or herself. It seems that non-MS techs or users have better answers and suggestions. I've seen suggestions from others who have the same problem, which have given relief to a few. But these same fixes have been unsuccessful for other users and have been called destructive by a few. I'm not likely to try a 'shot in the dark' to fix this Microsoft generated problem. And I think anyone with half a brain should know by now that this is a Microsoft issue. It is not a 'User' generated issue. The problem is too similar for all who are complaining about it for it to be 'User' generated. The problem is simple. The solution may not be simply. But the problem is this: The Links inside most webpages and other content generated by IE8 will not work, period. If you click on a Link nothing happens, except for getting an "error on page" message in the lower left hand corner of IE8, where it tells you what is loading and when it is 'Done' loading. And sometimes you will not even get this "error" message. I just clicked a link above this box I'm writing in at this moment. It is a Microsoft link. Nothing happened at all. No message, no nothing. Microsoft needs to step up to the plate on this issue and find a resolution, instead of blaming the user. And all this stuff about uninstalling this or installing that seems to be, merely, a weak effort to push this problem down the road or under the carpet. I've read tech answer after tech answer, but have yet to see an answer that resulted in this problem being fixed. Instead, it seemed that the tech answers were just as lost as the rest of us. Microsoft, we need real help!!!

Hi, Could you list the steps you have tried? Does “most webpages” indicate that some Hyperlinks do work in IE 8 ? Please make sure IE8 is the default explorer, also disable\uninstall third party explores. Windows 7 64-bit comes out-of-the-box with Internet Explorer 8 in both 32-bit and 64-bit. Unless you explicitly launch IE8 64-bit, you're probably running the 32-bit version. By default, IE8 32-bit automatically runs when you start the browser from any one of the following locations: •The Quick Launch toolbar •The desktop •The Start menu •A hyperlink or a file type that is associated with Internet Explorer If you want to see which version is currently running, check the Help -> About Internet Explorer window. The 64-bit version will note that it's the 64-bit version. You can run IE with either 32 bit mode or 64 bit mode separately to check the result. If both encounter the same issue, I suggest open Internet Options->Advanced->click Reset....reset IE to eliminate if any third party add-ons or corrupt temp files cause this. If the issue persists, let us check if the files are registered properly: 1. Click Start, and then click Run 2. Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll in the Open box, and then click OK. 3. Click OK when you receive the following message: * DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded 4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for the rest of the DLL files by replacing the regsvr32 urlmon.dll command in the Open box with the following commands: * regsvr32 actxprxy.dll * regsvr32 shdocvw.dll * regsvr32 mshtml.dll * regsvr32 browseui.dll * regsvr32 jscript.dll * regsvr32 vbscript.dll * regsvr32 oleaut32.dll Please let us know if any error received. Meanwhile, I suggest using the System File Checker to look for missing and corrupt files that could be causing this issue. The System File Checker tool To determine whether the issue that you are experiencing is caused by one or more system files that are used by Windows Vista, run the System File Checker tool. The System File Checker tool scans system files and replaces incorrect versions of the system files by using the correct versions. To run the System File Checker tool, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, and then type cmd in the Start Search box. 2. Right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue 3. At the command prompt, the following line, and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow Please tell us the result.
