Free upgrade to Windows 7
I've heard rumors about a free upgrade to Windows 7 for laptop owners that have Windows Vista pre-installed. I bought a new laptop a few weeks ago and wanted to know if the rumor was correct and what are the full details of the upgrade. Thank you.

This rumour is - well, a rumour. The newest, more credibleversion of the free Vista -> Win7 upgrade options is here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/166563/windows_7_upgrade_starts_soon.html?tk=rss_news.But you may wait two days longer, as the official pricing / upgrade details should be revealed after Computex. (That's another rumour, of course.) Mobile AMD64 3000+, VIA Apollo K8T800 chipset, 1 G RAM, ATIRadeonMobility 9700, 20x DVDRW, C:XPSP3 (55G),D:WIN7 (25G),F:DATA (250G)

Ian - Welp... That's pretty much all they are - rumors. There's a LOT of that going around. At this point in time, Microsoft has NOT divulged anything on pricing, discounts, specials, upgrade incentives, package bonuses, special bundles, etc, et al, ad nauseum. Everyone and their brother (and sister) seems to be speculating endlessly on the subject and I'm sure that Microsoft will be releasing the information we've* ALL been waiting for sometime in the near future. When? Only the folks at Microsoft (and probably the hardware vendors) know that for sure. There are stories floating around about an upgrade program - where if you buy a system after a given date, you should get Win 7 free. This story's been floating about since January (or so). As yet, we don't have anything from Microsoft nor any of the vendors in question. BUT... If they're going to do what they did when Vista was released, that generally means the vendor will have included a coupon in the box the computer came in among the other paperwork (getting started guide, warranty card, mini manual, etc...) that you can redeem when Win 7 is released. If you didn't get one, then you're not likely eligible for a free upgrade. About the ONLY thing I can tell you with 100% certainty on this - the pricing info will be released some time before Oct 22nd - the day Win 7 is released.Stay tuned...*@ Chitbill: "We've" in this case means anyone who wants to know and gives a fig about Win 7 pricing...
