Formatting my hardrive
I have Windows 7 on my computer and I want to to format my hard drive to install fedora as a 2nd operating system. How can this be done without messing up my computer? Is there an easy step by step process I can use? I am pretty new to Windows 7 and have never done this in real life. Please help. I am adding to this because of some wonderful advice from a responder. I only have the C: drive and it currently has 378 GB of free space. What third party utility will I need if any? Like I said I only have the one drive and no other partitions. If you need more information I will give you what you will need.

I suspect that you mean that you want to create a new, empty, partition on your hard drive on which you can install a second OS (Fedora linux), correct? How many partitions are on your drive now? If you have more than one, it may be simplest to move the files on an existing (*NOT* the current OS partition) partition and install Fedora there. If, however, you have only one logical drive (typically C:), you have to reduce the size of C: to free up space for a second partition. You *may* be able to do that using Win 7 disk management tools, but it is likely you will need a third party utility to shrink C: nondestructively to make room. If you provide more details about your current configuration (hard drive size, # of partitions/logical drives, etc.) it will be easier for responders here to offer specific advice.

Hi, You may refer to the following link for the detailed steps of how to repartition your hard disk by using the Shrink feature in Disk Management: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Can-I-repartition-my-hard-disk Does it work?
