I go to Program Files (x86) click on a folder, click properties, click customize, click change icon, select icon, clicl ok, click apply no change. It works for Program Files but not Program Files (x86) . I've tried a couple of commercial icon change programs with no result.

You may rebuild icon cache and try again. 1. Click Start, and open Computer. 2. On the Tool bar, click Organize and choose Folder and Search Options. 3. Click the View tab, and check to select the Show hidden files and folders option, and click OK. 4. Then, enter the following directory: %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local 5. Find the IconCache.db file, and rename it as IconCache.db.old. 6. Close the window, and restart the computer.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I tried all suggestions noted but to no avail. I still can't change the icon for folders in Program Files (X86).

Did you ever find a solution for this? I'd like to change this icon as well, but it doesn't appear to be possible.

No, I tried several different suggestions to no avail. If I move the file to a different library I can change the icon but I still can't change icons in Program Files(X86).

I JUST did this successfully. After trying all other suggestions.... I went into "Organize". Therein I went into "Security" ... Therein I went into the "groups and users" box... I clicked on Users (Usually beneath Creators, beneath System, beneath Administrators)... I hit the edit box - which allows you to edit security for the users - and I allowed Modify .... which lets you access folder options after signin with your user name. Taa Daa.... I then went to properties... changed the icon... and it took!! Good luck boys. B
