Folder Redirection alternatives
The problem that I'm trying to solve is getting all user's data to be backed up. Many users do not follow the 'save to network share' rule, no matter how many times you ask them. Then we tried disk quotas to limit the amount they could put on their drive, but it's getting in the way of Windows Update. Then I tried Folder Redirection, but it's screwing up desktop shortcuts and deleted all the contents of a constantly-moving user's My Documents folder. I've heard from many people that Roaming Profiles are awful and cause more trouble than what they're worth. Aside from all that, is there anything else that can be done to ensure that all work-related information will be backed up? BTW, this is in Windows 7 forums because most of my users use this OS.

If your users aren't responsible enough to save to network when doing company related work, then maybe you need to have a meeting with the department heads and explain to them exactly what will happen if one of their people screws up a document, and doesn't have a backup for it. Back in my working days, we had a similar problem with people not wanting/bothering to S2N after each revision, and that's what I had to do. All it takes is one person to lose a file they've been working on for days to sort of get the message across to the rest of the users. Education is about the only resolution to this problem, unless you have backup programs that are going to run at, say, 1AM to backup the user's files to network while they are not there (assuming you're not open 24-7). Of course, now you need extra network storage for this. It's not always easy being in IT, is it :-) SC Tom

No, it's generally not easy in IT, which makes me think I'm a masochist, because I absolutely love it :) I'm feeling that what you're saying is truly the only route, and it's unfortunate. The guy I replaced and my boss fought that fight for a good amount of years before they gave up. When things like that happen, the fingers always point in our direction, which is such a pain. Things like that being when a file or files get deleted or corrupted. For all you viewers, I'd still appreciate it if anyone else happens to have a suggestion.
