Folder Redirection: Forcing existing redirected users to use slow link mode
Hi, We have a W7 enterprise deployment with all users having all of their folders redirected to a UNC share on a 2008 r2 server. Redirection is performing well, with one slight issue. We are experiencing performance issues, and one way around this seems to be to change the slow link mode detection settings so the PC thinks it is in a slow link mode. I have done this by setting the latency to 1ms This performs excellently if the user is a new user and the PC has an empty CSC, however. When the user is an existing redirected user who has an existing cache on the machines then the offline files do not appear to be going into slow link mode. Is there something I am missing?

Hi, Thanks for the post. Users also can configure how often Offline Files will determine network performance after a manual transition to online mode. To configure the computer, in Control Panel, click Network and Internet, and then click Offline Files. On the Network tab, specify a number of minutes. The default setting is to check network performance every five minutes. Please lower the number of minutes for a test. Meantime, you may specify the throughput number instead of latency in GPO. Hope this helps. Juke, Thanks for the reply, as a test, I had already lowered the checking frequency to 1 minute, and am still seeing the behaviour. More infuriatingly, I logged in with my test account on a machine & account that had previously been going into slow link mode and this morning it is online. I will test with throughput set to higherthan the local network's bandwidth and see what happens. Rob

Hi, Now, please restart the service of Offline Files in service manager for a test. Meantime, make sure that you have not hit the Work Online button manually. Also, based on my experience, when you ping a remote computer which is in the same office, Usually, the latency is less than 1ms. Maybe it cause this situation. Additionally, if you want to re-build Offline Files cache, please refer to the following article. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/230738 Regards, Juke TechNet Subscriber Support in forum If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tnmff@microsoft.com.Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. further testing has shown some strange results. Profile redirected to UNC share, and GPO to lower the slow link mode bandwidth is deployed, I can see Events in event viewer where the system is transitioning to Slow Link mode. The strange thing is that the folders that are redirected are showing as online and the performance seems to bear this out. Format the CSC - same thing happens Delete the profile from the PC and format the CSC this seems to fix the issue permanently. Trouble is this approach is a little intensive in terms of time to implement and not really workable. Rob
