Floppy format in windows 7 x64
Hi All, I am able to format and use floppy discs that have been formated on an XP machine, if I take a new floppy and right click on the drive and select format, windows explorer crashes and restarts. I then put the same disk into an XP machine and format it, put it back into the windows 7 x64 machine and I can read and write to it and re-format it. Any Ideas? I have an AMD Phenom 4 core with 4GB DDR2 ram, An ASUS M2N68-AM Plus board with the latest BIOS update. The floppy drive works fine in XP machine. I use Floppies for drivers and stuff when doing XP installs, so I use it a lot, It was only when I tried to format a new disk that the problem became apparent, I have a customer with a similar problem.

Floppy drives are a very bad way of doing driver installs - use a USB stick in preference (apart from anything else they are cheaper in the long run - at least if you don't lose them as often as I do<g>). Floppies were never intended to run in systems with the speed and capability of modern ones - and the continued support for them is a continuing source of surprise to me (but then MS has always attempted to make anything possible in Windows, even if they do throw the baby out with the bathwater in applications and languages) I've never been happy with floppy support since Win9x died - and I took the hint and copied anything I had on floppy that I needed/wanted to keep to HD and/or CD. -- Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

My M4A77D does not even have a floppy controller. The chassis has never had one installed either. USB sticks are the way to go looking forward. Consolidate drivers to a USB stick. Change the BIOS setting for PnP OS (Plug and Play OS) to yes\enabled and let Windows assign the IRQ's for the devices.
